I don't know of any $1K cancellation fee for home users of anything SE offers - for DSL it is $300 I believe. Read the TOS - that will spell out all fees. |

| I just read the Table of One Time Charges. I better email Speakeasy to try to find out as much as I can about what they would charge me to get DSL service. I live in an apartment building and the inside wiring fee might be a deal breaker if it applies. Then there's the dispatch time charge, the no access fee, the line conditioning fee, etc. |

| There should be no inside wiring fees - a line share install uses your current phone line that goes into the house. Choose a phone jack to use and plug the modem in and put filters on all other items connected to the phone line.
Most installs are self installs now and if you already have DSL - highly doubt line conditioning will be needed.
Why are you looking to switch to SE? Is your DSL currently problematic? If so - nothing will change with SE. |

| I'm looking to switch because Verizon has given me various reasons to hate them over the years. They blocked email from Europe (»www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/14···l_block/). They called me at home too often and one of their sales people told me she can't remove me from her list (until I spoke to her supervisor). When whey walked me through configuring my computer for their DSL, they told me to shut off my firewall (I eventually found out it works with it on). The last time I had a connection problem, they told me never to disconnect, even when I'm not using the internet, but I still disconnect anyway for safety. A few other problems too.
Also, I might be able to take advantage of Speakeasy's servers-allowed rule. I have a web application that my web host doesn't allow to run because it's resource intensive, so I'd like a script on my website to tell my computer to run it, then my computer will sftp the results to my website. I don't think that's the kind of thing Verizon would catch, but I think it's technically not allowed. |

| If you're cool with the price, SE is a good choice. I used them for years at various packages and rates and overall was pleased with the service.
The biggest hassle is the quality of the lines coming to your house. If you happen to have the new SE service over your existing line, and you've had no stability problems with your VZ DSL, then your new SE DSL will likely work very well.
Over the years as developments have sprung up between here and the CO, the quality of my line has suffered and SE says there's nothing they can do about it. I'm finally going to drop SE for FIOS now that it's here, largely because my line drops all the time during thunderstorms...though the cost savings are nice too.
I will miss being able to run my own servers ('legally') from home but it's not worth the t'storm hassle and higher cost.
If your current VZ DSL is good, get the shared-line service (not 'OneLink', aka dry-line). Though it'll require you to drop your VZ DSL first then add the SE service, meaning some amount of downtime, it should ensure your current line is used.
If you can't have any downtime, then you'll need SE to install OneLink, which means a different line, the quality of which - sadly - is impossible to qualify.
Otherwise, if you have a problem with the SE service, call them. TechSupport via online tickets used to be fast but now I rarely ever bother due to the wait times. However, their phone support has continued to be effective, friendly, and helpful.

| I just found out that Verizon has been charging me more than twice their advertised price. If you compare their current advertised price to Speakeasy's price, there's a bigger difference than I thought. I better try to get a refund from Verizon before I switch ISPs.  |
