| [ Extreme] Copy programs from the PRV (8300HD) to a SATA drive
I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD box by Rogers Cable for the past year. I want to transfer my PVR recordings from the 8300HD to my computer better yet to a SATA drive.
I noticed that there are several options for several inputs and outputs in the back of the unit (USB, Firewire, SATA) still transferring the data from the 8300HD is still a mystery to me. I don't think copying the programs to a VCR is what I would call a good idea.
The goal here is to backup my TV programs on the current PVR, by a new one and restore the programs on it.
Any suggestion or comment is truly welcomed! Pointing me to a web site or two is OK by me!

You want to do what many people want to do. But....you can't. The Sata connection allows for an external Esata hard drive but it will only supplement the capacity of the internal hard drive. You can't transfer existing programs to it. If you added it the box will record new programs on it but you will not be able to use those programs on any other Rogers box or your computer. The data is encrypted and keyed to the box that made the recordings. If you move the external hard drive to your computer it will appear blank. If you move it to another Rogers PVR it will be formated and you will lose your recording. If I have the facts wrong someone please correct me because I would just love to use the data on my external sata drive to make DVD's of my favourite programs. The best you can do is use the copy to VCR function of the PVR to make an analog copy of your programs to an external DVD recorder rather than a VCR. The recordings will be going through an analog step to get to the DVD but right now it's the best you can do. |

| reply to cdplayeron I think what stephenisaac said is correct. Sadly rogers uses a firm ware that doesn't allow you to sepcify which drive you what to record on (external/internal). And even if you got the shows you wanted on your external harddrive the data stored on the PVR is encrypted with a key unique to that cable box. Even if you were to physically swap drives, the new box wouldn't be able to decode the programs of the old box.
What you want to do would be possible if it weren't for the restrictions put in place on your box.
Burning to dvd isn't a solution unless you have a stand alone blue ray/hd dvd burner. No idea how much those cost.. most likely more then $1,000.... and even then you wouldn't be able to use the 'copy to vcr' function (because it outputs at a lower resolution).. so you might have macrovision copy protection issues..
If there is a way of doing it, i would really like to know too!! |

| reply to cdplayeron Thanks folks for the sanity check!
I knew more or less that what I wanted to do was not possible BUT I was hoping that there may be a workaround available. -- "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." (-Japanese Proverb)

| I dont have a PVR, but i have a 3250HD and I am able to record to my computer via the firewire port. Not all channels work, as some are encrypted. But Who knows about recorded content, it may work. It'll just take lots of time and hard drive space, as the format transferred thru the firewire port is MPEG2 transport stream, which are huge. About 10GB for an average length movie in 1080i. -- GO LEAFS GO! Don't question the authoritaaaa! |

| reply to cdplayeron For firewire info - »www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthr···?t=56259
they also have a lot of info on adding external drives and even changing the internal one. Your still not going to be able to transfer from one box to another as it is locked to the box. |

@rogers.com | reply to cdplayeron I will confirm that the firewire output works, however, a few networks (CBS is the only one I remember) has the broadcast flags on it making it only output black. |
