However, Cellular providers are fairly close to the point that SIP to SIP calling will be the norm for phones. This will coincide with the 4g push where everything will be data. This reduces complexity of switches where trans coding will not have to take place rather it will happen on the fly on phones. Advances in DSP technology has made this feasible today, non Nextel PTT already works this way so in practice it's a good thing.
The reason this will happen is because each phone will need it's own ip address and to reduce complexity of the system the ip will have to be static. With billions of phones suddenly requiring static ip assignments you'll see a big push towards IPv6. -- Mac Chatter »www.macchatter.net |
