point & shoot camera recommendation

Looking for a recommendation for a good point & shoot camera. We had a Kodak DC3400 camera that did a nice job for us indoor & outdoor but that died after a few years. I then purchased a Kodak DX6490 to replace it which is our current camera. It has nice features but seems to be weak indoors because we get allot of fuzzy pics, even outdoor pics are fuzzy sometimes.

Over the weekend we attended a family party and I took about 30 indoor shoots and had to delete about 12 pics. So that's it, we are looking for a suggestion so we could replace the DX6490. I’d like to stay under $400

TIA

There are others, those are just the first to pop into my head.

That’s fine, that’s a great starting point but if you think of anything else I'll look at anything else as well. This has been a long time coming, our camera needs to be replaced. We have experienced too many failures with it and the last episode is why I gave up. We had a rare family holiday dinner, that doesn’t happen often. A nephew serving overseas was back and his 3 brothers and their families attended, again very rare to have them all in one place. I advised my sister whatever pics I took I would burn to CD for her but almost half were deleted, this is not good. If it were a few bad vacation shots that is one thing but this is a little different. The only good thing was there were other cameras there, hopefully someone else did better than I did....

Here's the break-down for you.. These are the best being offered from each manufacturer that have a more serious edge to their products.. All are typical Point and Shoot cameras that are easy to use BUT have more serious manual features.

Canon G9
Nikon CoolPix P50
Ricoh GX100
Samsung NV20
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9
Panasonic DMC-FZ18K

In my opinion, take a close look at the Samsung and Ricoh cameras. The Ricoh in particular has IS and an optional electronic viewfinder that mounts to it's hot-shoe. I noted that there are other hot-shoe mounted optical viewfinders available that would work great with this camera so, no need for an electronic VF from Ricoh when you can slap any optical VF on it..

It was between the Panasonic DMC-FZ18K and the Canon G9 so I just purchased the Panasonic DMC-FZ18K. I received two different replies (here) and one IM and all the replies had the Panasonic in common, so that is how I made the decision. It was a decent price and from what I read it all looked good. Hope it goes well, thank guys!

Hate to sound like a broken record, but currently under $200 the Canon A720is can do some amazing things for the cost especially if you really learn it. And also especially just if a casual vs serious need.

And again compared to some of the recommendations here (arguably better, but not extremely unnless serious) at or over your price range.

That’s OK, the Panasonic DMC-FZ18K is being shipped for $301. I remembered a coworker brought in some printed pics from his Panasonic Digital from a vacation he went on about 2.5 years ago and they were perfect pics. So if I’m getting something slightly newer I should be happy.

EDIT
Just a follow up on this, the vendor called to confirm everything and I asked him “if I was getting everything we need to get up and running”. You already know how this is going to turn out, I ended up upgrading the order to a package deal which doubled the price. We got a bigger memory card, card reader, 3 year warranty, rapid charger, case and a few other miscellaneous items that I can’t remember. He gave me one of those “if you purchased everything separately” lines I would have to spend even more Blah Blah Blah. Oh well, it’s Christmas so much for my $400 cap. And last but not least, I asked my coworker about his camera, he has the 10. He has some pics from their Alaskan vacation he is going to show me next time I’m in his office. Hopefully I could reach out to you guys in the forum again if/when we need some technical help. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it and happy holidays to everyone else.
