Looking for an honest ISP

I live in a remote area of Virginia - on the Eastern Shore. DSL or Cable is not available but Verizon has plans to expand into my area within 2 years.

My current ISP is DMV.com which is part of the Coretel network. For about 6 months now my connections to this ISP are being routed by a transparent proxy through Adzilla servers which I find to be totally unacceptable. This arrangement was made without any notice to subscribers.

More information here on the Coretel and Adzilla partnership:

Naturally, I am interested in switching my ISP as soon as possible. There are only a few local Dial-up numbers I can use. People PC and NetZero have local numbers but require either Netscape or IE to be used as a browser. I use Firefox and a linux system so neither of these services appear to be available according to their CS representatives.

I wonder if any one has any experience with the Verizon Dial-up services which offers a local number?

Check out this company.
www.va.net

They offer dialup for $15/month.

The same company also owns www.pa.net. I used their dialup for four years with no problems before upgrading to their DSL service. They also support Firefox and Linux.

Thanks for the reply!

I have just tried their local dialup number, 414-2038, which is still part of the Coretel network.

The one thing that I have learned is that I can connect to any local numbers provided by many ISP providers using my current DMV.com username and password. Va.net is no exception and I am still logged in to them while posting this reply.

It seems that all of the local numbers I can find are controlled by Coretel.

The reason they say you need IE or Netscape is they want you to use their crappy connection software. I use Juno (same as NetZero) on Windows and Linux and I don't need their software to connect.

Windows=
Open Internet Options and make a new connection using your user name, password and local phone numbers. Make a shortcut to this connection wherever you want.
Linux=
Using any dialer you want (wvdial, gnome-ppp, kppp etc) do the same.
Surf away
I can access my webmail if I want. And I have my email set up in Outlook Distress and Thunderbird. As far as bumping you off the net after a certain time they do the same wether you are using their software or not.

Thanks for your reply!

I may have to give them a try. I did try to connect using their local number and could not which is a good sign that they are not using Coretel servers.

Their price is also $10.00 dollars less than my current ISP.

Have you tried Localnet.com? I used them for two years and the service was great and real people in the USA answered the phone when I called. The price of service was only 9.99 a month. And I was connecting unlimited dual channel ISDN at that price!

Mark42,

Does LocalNet have any restrictions on there dial-up service? I've read that most ISP's will cut you off after 3 or 4 hours of continuous usage. This is usually in there terms of service agreement. I can't find anything about it in LocalNet's terms of service agreement. Does LocalNet do this or is it really unlimited dial-up?

I do not want to be connected all the time, but I am usually online 4 or 5 hours at a time. Would this be a problem with LocalNet?

I have been checking out LocalNet's site and I haven't found the answer to this question. I thought maybe you might know since you have used there service before.

Thanks in advance!

I was connected 24/7 and they never questioned my usage.
