[connectivity] Routing issue/customer service

Second time I've had an apparent Verizon routing problem.

Situation -
- trying to connect to my Credit Union - meriwest.com
- get a server error message - "M7 Email webmaster at pacific.net"
- same result with two different computers, each running different linuxes
- same result with three different web browsers
- Verizon system status page not working, so I can't tell if there are issues
- used network-tools.com to get authoritative name servers for meriwest.com
- used authoritative web server to get ip address for meriwest.com - 208.106.118.75
- used ip address in browser to avoid DNS issues - no change
- rebooted router & computers - no change
- traceroute from network-tools.com to meriwest.com is OK
- Credit Union says no issues with meriwest.com
- called Verizon and spoke to Level 1
- went through standard fault tree - no joy.
- "tech" has no ideas - must call back with Windows or Mac so they can share connection
- I don't have Windows or Mac
- "tech" has zero knowledge, just follows their procedure
- "tech" can't check meriwest.com - no Internet access

Suggestions?

Last routing problem was six months ago & I had a heck of a time getting to Level 2. This time they won't connect me with Level 2.

Verizon works well most of the time, but there appears to be nothing you can do about problems when it doesn't, as they have no technical knowledge. I've really had it with Verizon.

Is Earthlink DSL customer service better? (They used to be...) I hope not to renew my contract.

Looks like Meriwest was wrong about there not being a problem with their site. Just after I posted the above, I got the following for meriwest.com --

"Meriwest site doesn't live here....
Please try again later.
They are aware of the problem and working on it."

Still would appreciate an answer as to whether Earthlink DSL (or someone else) would be a better alternative. I can't see renewing with Verizon because they have the least capable technical support of any ISP I've ever used. "We're the Phone Company. We don't care. We don't have to."

Well, here's what you can expect with Earthlink. For a lot of issues that may arise, you will call Earthlink, who will then have to contact Verizon since it's their lines. Support sucks no matter who you go with anymore. The best you can hope with any of them is getting one of the few that has even half a clue.

If they are even still around. »Executives Leaving Earthlink Didn't take Sunrocket long to literally vanish when the Execs started leaving.

Using either 'nslookup meriwest.com' at a command prompt, or in the Sam Spade Win32 tool, I get a different result than you:

C:\Documents and Settings\User>nslookup meriwest.com
Server: dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
Address: 68.94.156.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: meriwest.com
Address: 75.10.68.8

And Sam Spade:
12/20/07 00:44:40 dns www.meriwest.com
Mail for www.meriwest.com is handled by fw-sgs.meriwest.com
Canonical name: meriwest.com
Aliases:
  www.meriwest.com
Addresses:
  75.10.68.8

I have an OpenDNS account, and I get odd results with their name servers. With "Typo Correction" enabled, I don't get the same results as I get with the ATTIS DSN servers that come with my 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' account:
C:\Documents and Settings\User>nslookup meriwest.com 208.67.222.222
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: meriwest.com.aosake.net
Address: 208.67.219.130

But, when I disable the OpenDNS "Typo Correction" option (you need an account with them for this; without an account OpenDNS defaults to "Typo Correction" enabled), I get the same result as when I use the ATTIS DNS servers:
C:\Documents and Settings\User>nslookup meriwest.com 208.67.222.222
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: meriwest.com
Address: 75.10.68.8

So it looks like something fishy going on with DNS.

BTW, using either the 'meriwest.com' domain name, or the IP address, I get to a site identifying itself as, "Meriwest Credit Union". Oddly, if I post them in such a manner as to create a link in the page, the link errors out.
