| The only people complaining
...are those who can't get DirecTV, and who want to see it fail. DirecTV customers, for the most part, are enjoying the hell out of having more HD than anyone else (except for Dish, which is actually pretty close in channel count).
Calling a comment at a conference an "announcement" is Swanni-spin, something he's known for. Any official discussion on HD rollouts from DirecTV said "up to".
Why?
Because they don't control the content - only the delivery. A year ago it seemed likely that there would be something like 100 national HD 'channels' that could be broadcast by 12/31/2007 - dependent on the providers actually getting their act together and building HD studios and providing distribution services to the end-user providers. In some cases that didn't happen. (e.g. Disney and some of the other "coming soon" channels). Not DirecTV's fault - pretty much if it's available TODAY in HD, it's available in HD on DirecTV TODAY.
