| KYW now on channel 256 in Plainsboro Central Jersey System
Tonight I noticed that we have the Philadelphia CBS channel KYW-3 in standard definition on digital channel 256. We have never had access to this channel before. (Although, someone mentioned it was on cable channel 3 years and years ago.) I personally don't watch any of the Philadelphia channels, but I still thought it was an interesting change. |

| Wow, this is great news! Now I can watch the Eagles when they play on CBS (which isn't often, maybe two times a yea). I would always miss those games because we didn't get them. We always had the other Philly stations; I never understood why we didn't have that one. Now, if they would provide the HD feed... Also, I wish we would get Comcast Sportsnet out of Philly, then I would get the rest of the Philly teams. |

BTW, I live a couple of miles from you in West Windsor. Unfortunately, being just over the county border into Mercer, we're in the Philly DMA. While we get all the Philly local channels (including KYW-3) in both SD and HD, we get NYC locals only in SD. Furthermore, a few years back Comcast shoved WNBC-4 and WPIX-11 over to digital channels 253 and 254 respectively, screwing a lot of analog customers and bewildering just about everybody in the process.
For the record, Cablevision, which serves Robbinsville, Hamilton, and Yardville (towns SOUTH of West Windsor, also in Mercer County and therefore in the Philly DMA) provides HD feeds of NYC locals in addition to Philly stations. Verizon FiOS TV customers in Mercer County get BOTH Philly and NYC local channel feeds in HD and SD (and on their proper "dial" positions). Comcast on the other hand, largest and arguably the most expensive cable company, SCREWS Mercer County subs with regard to NYC channels. They just don't get it! Maybe, just maybe, when 50% of its present WW customer base defects to FiOS over the next year or two, they will.
Enjoy KYW in SD. |

| I moved to Plainsboro from West Windsor so I feel your pain. When I moved here I didn't research the cable situation, I had no idea I lost everything by going 4 miles down the road First time I tried to tune to Comcast Sportsnet, and couldn't find it, I went into shock (although, it was probably the best thing, the way the Philly teams have been playing the last four years...).
I am waiting for FiOS to get to Plainsboro to see what channels they will be providing. |

BTW, I was told that my address is tentatively scheduled to be FiOS-ready on March 18, 2008. It's not soon enough!!! |

1 edit | I wish down in Ocean County, that we would receive the Philadelphia locals in HD. Currently on my system we only receive the NY locals in HD and the Philadelphia locals in SD.
I know for a fact, that KYW, WPVI and WTXF broadcast their local news in HD and I'd love to be able to watch it that way. Also KYW and WTXF show in many cases, different NFL matchups on Sundays than WCBS & WNYW and I'd love to be able to watch them in HD as well.
Probably won't happen anytime soon though. |

| You receive a good OTA HD single in Princeton from KWY 3? I have never done OTA but I thought about it. What kind of antenna do I need? Does it need to go on the roof? Sorry about the basic questions, but I have never used an antenna. Do you receive any other OTA HD Philly stations? |

So it looks like they only have the NY versions of the big networks. Hmmm. Not good. I need the Philly channels so I can watch the Eagles. I also did a phone number search and Verizon says it is not available in my area. |

1 edit | reply to harpshutler Out in Princeton area you would probably need an outdoor antenna just because of the distance. But SE PA/NJ is flat so the signal carries pretty far. Over on AVS there is a guy who lives in Bridgewater NJ and gets both NYC and Philly HD OTA with his setup.
On NFL games, not sure if there is any blackout rules about you living in another teams territory but getting their CBS/FOX affiliate through cable, like if the Jets were playing or something at 1PM on CBS, would they black out the 1PM game on FOX on the Philly affiliate, just for the areas that get WTXF in NJ, obviously in Philly we would see a 1PM game since we are not in Jets territory. Of course with an antenna this isn't an issue:)
Check out »www.antennaweb.org you can input your address and it will tell you what stations you can pick up and with what kind of antenna. Great little website.
Oh and WTXF(FOX) in Philly has done major work in the last couple months with their digital OTA signal, it is much stronger now. Antennaweb probably doesn't reflect this yet. With a small indoor antenna, i get all the major stations at 6 or 7 bars out of 10 on my TV's signal strength meter, WTXF pegs it to 10/10 every time. |

| reply to markpl I have a Winegard HD-7084P UHF/VHF antenna. Right now the Philly HD digital stations are on UHF, but on February 17, 2009, KYW (3), WPVI (6), WCAU (10) and WNET (12) will be on VHF. So you will need a VHF/UHF antenna. I get 3, 6, 10, 17, 29 and 57 in HD with my rooftop antenna. I can also get NY but I have stopped doing that because I get NY locals HD from both Comcast and Verizon.
I put the antenna up three and one half years ago because Patriot Media did not have the Philly locals in HD. I was able to get the Phillies in HD on 57, and all the Eagles games on 29 and 3. Fox 29 really boosted up its signal strength in September and it is very easy to get. So if you are an Eagles fan with only NY HD locals, an antenna is a must have. I have my antenna feed hooked up to a Sony DHG HDD500 HD DVR and my Dish Network 622 and 722, so I can time shift all ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX shows in HD.
I used to be able to get channel 12 in HD, but WNET reduced the wattage on its HD signal and I can only get it on Verizon now. However, when the digital transition occurs in Feb 2009, channel 12 will go HD VHF and it will be very easy to pull in.
With regard to NY locals in HD, I can get 2,4,5,7,9 and 11. 13 has a very weak signal and I cannot get it. I used to use the antenna to pull in Mets games in HD on channel 11. However, Patriot Media eventually added WPIX HD. |

Bandwidth is the obvious reason they're not carrying both sets of HDs. It puzzles me that they're not carrying WTXF and KYW, though, because of NFL coverage. Comcast areas stuck in between the Baltimore and DC DMA down there have both affiliates carried in HD so Ravens and Redskins fans will be able to see their teams in HD. Why something similar isn't done in Ocean County is strange.
Another strange thing about the Ocean County systems is that most systems, but not all, carry WPSG (SD), which carries some Phillies games. Basically, every system from Toms River to LBI to Tuckerton carry it on a digital channel. But the original Comcast of Ocean County system, which covers Brick Township, Pt. Pleasant and Bay Head does not carry it, even though the vast majority of the digital system is standardized between the two. |

1 edit | reply to harpshutler In Ocean County, signals - even VHF signals - are very difficult to pull in for both Philly and NYC. I believe WABC in NY and WCAU are marginal at best, and those are the only ones you can get.
Often, in southern Ocean County, you can pull in WMGM-TV, the little known NBC affiliate in Atlantic City. |

| reply to harpshutler KYW TV (Then a Group W owned NBC Station) then Comcast/Storer Cable Channel 37 was taken off Comcast/Storer of Central New Jersey on August 31st 1993 at the request of NBC owned WNBC TV invoking non duplication. On December 5th 2007 KYW now CBS owned returned to Comcast of Central New Jersey on digital channel 256. In a side note since NBC took over WCAU in 1995 WNBC has never made a peep about WCAU (Now Comcast digital Channel 253) being on our system. NBC owens both stations and gets all the viewers. KYW was owned by Group W/Wesinghouse in 1993 and NBC could not bare to let a single viewer watch Westinghouse owned KYW insted of WNBC.

| Ha, yeah I remember that whole debacle. KYW was removed from Cablevision of Monmouth because of that situation. It never affected Comcast/Storer systems in Ocean County, though. However, Ocean County customers who were in areas covered by Cablevision of Monmouth (Lakewood, Seaside, and a few other towns) had KYW taken away. |

| reply to harpshutler I frogot to say KYW was only was only removed on the Middelsex county part of the Comcast/Stored of Central New Jersey system. This did no effect viewers on the mercer part of the system who still got both KYW and WNBC. When KYW and WCAU switched networks two years later we ended up with CBS from Philly being blocked instead on NBC and we went back to having two NBCs WNBC and WCAU. It stayed that way untill we bgot KYW back a fe weeks ago. |

| reply to TurboDan If you go to antennaweb.org, and enter the Toms River zip code, it tells you Toms River is 54 miles from the NY signal and 57 miles from the Phila signal. With a good 60 mile antenna and a preamp, the Winegard 8200P or a Channelmaster should be able to pull in both the NY and Phila digital signals. In February 2009, when the VHF signals go digital, it will be very easy to pick up the HD VHF signal in Ocean County from either Phila or NY. For an Eagles fan, who only gets NY HD locals or a Jets or Giants fan who only gets Phila HD locals, a rooftop antenna is a must. I put my antenna up in April 2004 (back in the days when satellite did not have HD locals and Patriot Media only provided four NY HD locals) and have never regretted it. I still use the antenna for viewing because it gives the sharpest HD picture, and for recording on my DVRs. |
