Re: Avira AntiVir Personal Classic and Premium

I don't recall seeing that particular phrase, but I can tell you that Avira free version has no mail scanner. If you want a POP 3 scanner then you need to get Personal Premium version. It will detect malware in attachments and the email itself. You have various options in setting up the mail scanner. It can, for instance, be set to delete automatically an infected attachment and text will be inserted so that you still have the email just not the nasty. I don't use a mail scanner as Microsoft has stated many times that an email scanner should not be used on Outlook Express. The MVP's who specialize in OE tell everyone in the MS OE newsgroup to not use an AV scanner on OE as OE has a fragile data base and can be corrupted easily. I just download the attachment to disk and then right click scan it with Avira and I have not used the preview pane in OE since right after I got my first computer years ago. If you do want to use an email scanner on OE, be sure to back up OE regularly. I can point you to a good backup program for OE if you need one.

You might also be interested in Avira's Suite. It has a webscanner and Firewall in addition to the modules found in the Personal Premium version. I'm currently beta testing version 8 of the Suite that will be released next April. If you like Avira and buy Personal Premium or the Suite, you will be eligible for the upgrade next April. It will include a complete change for the GUI ...just to let you know if you don't like the current one...I like it but some don't.

Here are two links to free trials of both. I just read a post from some at Wilders who said they got the German version from one of these links...that is puzzling. They should be the English version.

Oh, Avira is very fast and very light resource wise.
