SoonerAl : Why not use an existing spare PC and setup a Windows Home Server. You can access it remotely via either a web based interface ( http: address) or a SSL link ( https: address). Additionally there is a Web Folder add-in to get files to/from the WHS.

»ihatelinux.blogspot.com/2007/11/···s-4.html

The upside is you control the server and data and don't need to depend on a third-party. The obvious downside it costs a few $$$$ to purchase the software so it does not meet your free requirement... :)

You could also simply setup a VPN or SSH server on one of your home PCs for secure remote file access. SSL-Explorer, OpenVPN and/or copSSH (a free windows SSH server installer package) with either the Tunnelier or WinSCP SSH clients would all work. All of those options are free...
--
"When all else fails, read the instructions..."
MS-MVP Windows Networking 2003-2007
