Multiple computers on DSL?

There must be a FAQ for this somewhere, as I'm sure a zillion people have asked the same question here - especially since asking it of CenturyTel gets a brusque "can't help" answer, and this should be a very simple matter.

I have a Westell 6100. My house is wired for internet from a central box. I want to set up a Linksys switch (not a router - a switch) so that I can connect two computers and a wireless access point.

I can get it to sort of work - one computer works fine, the second computer drops and drags and the wireless access point also gets dropped constantly.

How do I fix this?

You need a router (easy solution) or a PC set up with 2 NIC's and ICS.

If the 6100 is in router mode and has DHCP enabled what you propose should work. Search for the Westell FAQ on this site to get more details. IIRC it covers bridged vs router mode and dhcp enable.

I ran this way for awhile but just wasn't happy with the 6100's router performance. Seemed like I had much more issues with multiplayer online gaming trying to connect. I set up port forwarding for the app but still wasn't always reliable for me. It may have well been external, but I now run with the 6100 in bridged mode and use a netgear router for the PPPoE connection.

It sounds like you should also check your cabling, since one drop to a computer works, and the other works off and on.

I have almost exactly that setup and the same modem and it works fine here.

In addition to changing cabling as others have suggested, you can try using different ports on the switch. We did, at one point have a switch with an intermittently funky port. Also try rebooting the switch. I use a static IP LAN address for my WAP. Not sure if that would make any difference, but, as I said, we have no issues with what sounds like a very similar setup.

Thanks for the advice, all - I bought a D-Link router/G wireless and set the system up that way and the problem remains When only one PC or laptop is powered up and running, the system works fairly well. It doesn't matter which computer is on.

When a second (or third or fourth) computer is brought on-line, ONE of the computers will begin to drag and drop while the others okay (not as good as when only one is working). It doesn't matter which computers are on (I have 2 PCs and 2 laptops), it doesn't matter what order they're brought up. I've swapped out all the cables, I've changed ports.

I'm a bit mystified and rather frustrated at this point. I live out in the country, and on the one hand I'm glad I have the option of DSL (even if it's the slowest Century Tel offers), but after coming off a 10Mbps+ line, 1 (poorly working) Mbps is a bit frustrating.

Sounds like we need some basic information on your system.

Can you post the transceiver stats from your modem?

Can you post the speed results from a good and a bad client?

Is the performance issue over wireless or wired?

What does "drag and drop" mean in terms of performance? Is the client losing it's IP? or is it losing the wireless signal? Does this occur with the other good clients connected but inactive (no internet activity?)

Does your central box (Network Interface Device or NID) have an internal splitter and filter? or do you have the point of use filters on each telephone line?

Hang in there... my CT service was very spotty and unreliable until members Icon See Profile and tstolze See Profile helped me diagnose stuff. Turned out I had a combination of bad cable pair to the RO and a bad NID.
