It could not happen to a better company. It was a lousy business plan. The could have went the cheep dial up route for customers who do not want broadband or as a back up or gone into web and account hosting provide a email web host service independent of broadband providers. Instead Earthlink went on a campaign of intrusion on private telocs property and when the courts shot that down a la Brand X, Earthlink thought could make it on the government muni-wifi dole.
