Re: Avira AntiVir Personal Classic and Premium

I got Avira PE Premium on a free six months licence, and decided to turn off the email scanner. My email is SSL. I don't think this email scanner works with SSL but I could be wrong on that. Anybody know?

In any case, I agree with others that email scanners are worse than useless. They use extra resources and, in my case, seemed to slow down email delivery.

No, I do not use Outlook Express for email.

I think it is POP3 only. I don't use it but I believe that is what I read.

BTW, Avira is having server problems (not just the servers either) so if you can't get updates and get forbidden errors it is not you. The situation has been ongoing all day. Their servers were taken down at one point and then put up again and I got one update...six tries since then (hourly) all failed. Nothing can be downloaded from Avira currently including the AV itself.

Were I tote'n the Avira football, I'd devote whatever resources were required to fixing such "server related" problems!

They had server problems before I bought the suite. They had server problems when I was using the suite.

They have server problems.

Yes, I use POP3 but encrypted with SSL. I think for this to work properly, the AntiVir email scanner would have to decrypt/encrypt the email stream on the fly. I was curious if their email scanner attempts to do this. Actually I wonder if any AV does this. Maybe I'll start a separate thread on this topic.

My logs show updates were unsuccessful all yesterday afternoon, but I just got an update this morning.

I know! But irony here is that it is ONLY the premium servers with problems this time. The servers for the free version are working just fine.

Avira posted a notice a couple of hours ago apologizing and saying it was fixed. Both my ver 7 and the beta 8 said I was up to date two hours in a row after the notice that it was fixed. I believed the report and did not check Avira web page to see the current VDF number. I just read a thread saying that it ISN'T fixed and that Avira GUI "lies"...we are not updated!

It is really messed up because both versions are set to update hourly. Beta 8 on my virtual machine has me at VDF 133 and claims that is the latest update. Version 7 on the host machine has me at VDF 132 and claims that is the latest update. The latest update is actually VDF 136.

Avira is going, at considerable expense, into the boxed retail market in the USA. I think that is great but I think they had better fix their server problems first for good or all that effort may come to naught.

The current definition is VDF 137 which is what I got automatically this morning.

Yes, I have that one now. Radu said to delete the IDX files and temp files and then try a manual update. That worked for ver 7 and then I went to do the same for the beta and there were no temp files to delete, but I did delete the two IDX files. Then I opened the GUI to do a manual update and saw that while I was away eating that the beta had finally managed to update to 137. So, it was only ver 7 that stayed stuck at 132 and, from what others have posted, if I had waited even longer (I had waited several hours after Radu's announcement that it was fixed) that ver 7 probably would have eventually become "unstuck" without my intervening. Radu said his updated immediately after the server problem was fixed and neither of mine did...they claimed that I had the latest VDF when I didn't.

I just tried Antivir Free for two months on my laptop because of its good reputation and recommendations from posters on this and other forums. While using Antivir my laptop was frequently sluggish to respond, slow to boot and shutdown and sometimes the updates would take up to nine minutes. Last week I put avast! back on the laptop (I've previously also tried AVG without any noticeable computer problems) and there is no impact on computer performance, it updates without difficulty - running quite well in other words.

From what I've read about it I wish things had gone better during my two month "trial" of Antivir.

I was impressed by the AV comparatives tests on Antivir but since using it negatively impacts my computer's performance and it sometimes does not want to update I'm going to pass and use something else.

And I'm certainly not arguing with Mele re her comment about "free edition" servers not being affected by updating difficulties but a friend using PE Classic complained about being unable to update for several days this week and he told me last night that he's changed his AV program also.

Just a comment for what it's worth.

I meant that comment about the free servers not being impacted tongue in cheek. Avira has a long history of the free servers having problems but usually the premium servers are fast and quite reliable. So, I found it sort of funny that here was a time when the tables were turned and the premium users got a taste of what the free users put up with much of the time. I'm not surprised if your friend, using the free version, had a problem earlier this week but during the time of the premium server problem the free servers were ok...ironic and that's what I was commenting on.

Server issues aside (as Mele said, prior primary problem has been with free version update), the most often seen knock against Avira involves FP's.

And, if properly configured so that damage isn't sustained, what with all the instant suspicious file submission sites, I don't think an occasional FP to be a terribly bad thing. Surely, it's detection capability is very good ... always near the top in protection capability in testing.

Your discovery that it, for whatever reason, doesn't like your system highlights, again, the difficulty experienced by security software creators. There are so, so many variables. Avast! is a solid app and should serve you well.

Good luck!
