Re: Avira AntiVir Personal Classic and Premium

I just tried Antivir Free for two months on my laptop because of its good reputation and recommendations from posters on this and other forums. While using Antivir my laptop was frequently sluggish to respond, slow to boot and shutdown and sometimes the updates would take up to nine minutes. Last week I put avast! back on the laptop (I've previously also tried AVG without any noticeable computer problems) and there is no impact on computer performance, it updates without difficulty - running quite well in other words.

From what I've read about it I wish things had gone better during my two month "trial" of Antivir.

I was impressed by the AV comparatives tests on Antivir but since using it negatively impacts my computer's performance and it sometimes does not want to update I'm going to pass and use something else.

And I'm certainly not arguing with Mele re her comment about "free edition" servers not being affected by updating difficulties but a friend using PE Classic complained about being unable to update for several days this week and he told me last night that he's changed his AV program also.

Just a comment for what it's worth.

I meant that comment about the free servers not being impacted tongue in cheek. Avira has a long history of the free servers having problems but usually the premium servers are fast and quite reliable. So, I found it sort of funny that here was a time when the tables were turned and the premium users got a taste of what the free users put up with much of the time. I'm not surprised if your friend, using the free version, had a problem earlier this week but during the time of the premium server problem the free servers were ok...ironic and that's what I was commenting on.

Server issues aside (as Mele said, prior primary problem has been with free version update), the most often seen knock against Avira involves FP's.

And, if properly configured so that damage isn't sustained, what with all the instant suspicious file submission sites, I don't think an occasional FP to be a terribly bad thing. Surely, it's detection capability is very good ... always near the top in protection capability in testing.

Your discovery that it, for whatever reason, doesn't like your system highlights, again, the difficulty experienced by security software creators. There are so, so many variables. Avast! is a solid app and should serve you well.

Good luck!
