 [Cable HSI] Mediacom MAX 20/2

I have received word that 20/2 is in testing now. This should be rather interesting.

Maybe interesting because I'll watching my 8000/512 go into the toilet when they deploy it.

Maybe Mediacom can make it really "interesting" and turn the VIP service back up to 15/1 at the same time. Painful for everyone.

I've got a rather dumb question. Since 20/2 is not exactly ground-breaking on cable (several cable ISPs already have been offering a 2mbps upload - which upload capacity is cable's weak point), what exactly is involved and the point with "testing"?

I mean, in each area, the capacity is either there or it's not? The NOC should know what areas have the extra capacity and can handle the extra usage, right?

"Testing" is a loose word. Around Mediacom it can mean many things.

The real issue will be the 20Mbit down, not the 2Mbit up. A lot of areas can't even handle 8/512 service reliably...

True, I'd suspect the download side is used more than the upload side. However, the upload side has less capacity and is cable's weak spot.

But I still have to wonder why there appears to be question as to where the capacity is. The NOC should be fully aware of which areas have the capacity for such a release, and if not, start making plans to get capacity added.

This more seems like a guessing game. A few employees and customers that are beta testing speeds are not going to stress the individual areas as much as it will be when it goes live to more customers and thus mixing the times and the amounts of usage between all of them.

Obviously, this is simple minded, and I must be missing something. But I still seems cut and dry. It's not ground-breaking speeds. Mediacom has, or should have, all the necessary information as to capacity, usage and trends to what areas need attention beforehand without beta testing in limited fashion.

It's a free upgrade for Online max (15/1) customers.

Yeah, your synopsis sounds about right.

My understanding (I have no facts on this) is that MAX uptake hasn't been all that spectacular. Most are on VIP 10/1 or just the basic 8/512 packages.

It is supposed to be a "free" upgrade for current MAX subscribers, and I've been told wide availability not until perhaps late February but some areas may receive the upgrade a few weeks earlier.

Hah, I was just thinking about downgrading to 8/512. Now I guess I'll keep max. Probably be years before it's out though, still 2 mbit up would be swank.

This is great news for those of us that play bandwidth eating online games.

I noticed something going on with my connection the other day.
D/L is much faster but the U/L is still the same.

As for deployment, it took SIX months AFTER the mediacom rep told the Iowa City telecommunications commission that 8/512 would be up and running in 2 months.

Those speed tests aren't always accurate. Is it repeatable on other speed servers? I'd guess that was a fluke.

Most cable ISPs don't overcap. Meaning, you won't get above advertised speeds because overhead uses some.

Speedtest.net seems to be the most unreliable of speed tests.

I got this today:

I like to use testmy.net as I find it to be as reliable as
doing a real world transfer such as grabbing a Linux distro
from a major mirror.

I get 13.5-14mbit around the clock now. It took almost 2 years
to get past the point of 100KB/sec in my area and you better believe I
will use every drop of the 20/2.. =)
