Remember that 200k/s is kilobyte/sec and is actually 1.6Mbit/s, the whole bit, byte thing. Multiply your kilobyte download and upload by 8.

I know people swear by Speedtest.net results, but you can not always trust it is accurate. I trust an ftp upload and nntp download through multiple connections if I really want to know what my connection speed is.

NEVER once did those guys look around at the cable outside, except for once to replace a splitter that didnt do any good.

It's very weird because I remember during the time they upgraded VIP customers to 15/1 for free for a short time, I always got 14.6Mbit down which is normal. But this time I'm not? I don't live in a heavily populated area or in a big city or anything so it's not like the node I'm on is getting sucked, I get the same results when testing late at night.

It used to be that you had to get the wireless modem from mediacom for the Max upgrade, that has since been abolished. They probably just want the phone modem back since they are expensive. What the CSR "probably" was talking about was if you wanted wireless service then you'd have to purchase a router, she/he probably got confused and tried to act like they knew more than they did.

Tell them to upgrad you to the max WITHOUT a truck roll, WITHOUT a modem swap out, and WITHOUT an upgrade fee (there is a 1.99 electronic fee). If that doesn't work, PM Bainch here, he should be able to fix it for you, he has for others in the past.

This person had most definitely said I "had to" get the wireless router. I said I already had one and that it's not required anymore, but this CSR wouldn't budge. I haven't been around the Mediacom scene for long, but didn't the wireless router thing end a couple months ago?

Also, when I asked the latest CSR to push out the profile without a modem swap she got VERY angry at me. She was holding back flat out yelling at me. If it's fine without the router and bad with the router, then the problem is the router.

Possible firmware upgrade for the router? Otherwise you need a new router.

Can you confirm this? I was just on the phone with a rep trying to upgrade to the Max service, and was told my modem was incompatible. Mine problem is the same. Can't figure it out! What modem do you have? I have an SMB 8013WG, could it be the problem? I want to get rid of it since it's about the size of a small laptop but the local office keeps telling me that they don't have any other modems that will work with max. I can not seem to get above 1.2 MB on the upload side of it and the download has not gone above 16 MB or so. I've always got full speed any time of day so I'm not sure why I don't have better speeds here. I guess time will tell if it gets better and it's not official yet anyway. That is NOT a cap in the config file. it would either be capped at 512, 1m, or 2m, your is capped at 2m. always has been guy, i dont mean to burst anyones bubble but it is.
i have seen countless people report their speeds are poor when using that site but go to another site and they have great speeds.

those are just my experiences.

last night i proved that by doing over 5 tests there and never once getting over 11mb
but at the same time i could switch to speedtest.net and get 19mb.

the good thing about speedtest is they show a map of many locations thruought the usa to test from
the downside is that they do not show what the speed limit is of each particular site.

chicago and the twin cities do not have any issues cranking up and beyond 20mb.

its unfortunate that many sites do not have the speed tests set to test with larger files for faster connections.

Every time I test there I get 13.5-14mbit. Thats completely
consistent with DSLR's results as well as other speed tests.

It's really inconsistent right now. The speed is jumping all over and speedtest.net keeps showing wildly varying speeds. Yes, I realize it's probably still being worked on etc etc.

That's relative to the market. ~~Bellsouth~~AT&T wants $19.95 + phone line for 768/128 service. If I want the 256 upload that Mediacom's intro offering has, I need to fork over $32.95 + phone line for the 1.5/256 tier.

on the flip side 98% of the people use their upload to push email or gaming so in some respects 256 is ok.

256 does hurt your gaming if you wanted to host a match.
you cant host on 256k if you wanted more than 1 other person in the room.

but thats why its a starter package.

but even then the regular package is hard to host with on the upstream side.

overall $30 isnt bad for 3 meg cable.

I'm guessing that if you compare raw costs of bandwidth and hardware between 2005 and 2008, 2008 will be the lesser cost. However, that number doesn't account for increased support costs (e.g. O&M, wages, fuel, etc.) and increased volume of hardware and bandwidth required to continue increasing service offerings. Just because two of the variables in a multi-variable equation decrease, doesn't mean the resultant of the equation decreases.

Valid concern. I'm hoping Mediacom has allowed their network engineers to implement appropriate measures to ensure the network doesn't fall on it's knees when the 20/2 service is turned up. Some markets are apparently strained based on feedback in this forum. Maybe those markets will the the 2% that won't receive the 20/2 offer? I hope markets that are currently stable (specifically mine :D) are prepared and remain stable during the 20/2 deployment.

As a side note, I'm curious about the take rate for the Max service. CPE costs have dropped a little bit.

Bandwidth cost per gigabyte have dropped, largely due to network aggregation efforts (capital spend) but also some drop in transit costs (exchange / port fees.)

I believe 1.5/128 was more than $30 when Mediacom came to town. That was the only tier for quite a while, the price went up with no upgrades.

I see this as a good value downgrade for the casual internet user. It's not for me but a $20 savings with decent speed should appeal to some.

i 2nd that.

by the end of june is just around the corner and frankly its a pretty darn big area thats being upgraded. but few users in tha large area.

Even if I don't, I'm very happy with the 10/1.

And while I'm at it just one more thing to say. I have been a Mediacom customer for more years than I care to remember. I know lots of people come here to gripe and complain but not me.

I'm very happy with Mediacom and plan on remaining a customer for many more years. I have never had a problem that wasn't resolved to my satisfaction and also done in a timely manner by courteous people.
