Confirmed 12/768 now available in WV

Well I called today and confirmed it is in most parts of WV.
It will add $23 to my monthly bill and the upload is 768 which is what I'm looking for. She said you need at least 1.5GhZ cpu. 512MB Ram and a 100MB network card.

She ask me what OS I told her XP. Then she ask me Pro or Home, like it matters. I told her to take her pick, I'm running XP Home, XP Pro and Vista along with a few flavors of Linux. And she said they will have to have it professionally installed and it will be a one time set up fee of $69.

I told her I just got a new modem a few months ago and it's 2.0 DOCSIS compatible. She said someone still needs to come out. So they will be here next week after Christmas.

I appreciate the availability of upgrades but if they're going to sell them they need to get their stories straight. First of all, I have a P2 333 192mb server box that can take all of their "blazing" 6mb down. Certainly for best results more is desirable but DOCSIS 2.0 isn't bleeding edge technology, either. Speaking of that- I think they'd be harder pressed to find modems that AREN'T 2.0 compliant. The OS questions are simply laughable. Perhaps the first few installs will need to be monitored but I fail to see a need for a mandatory charge.

S'pose I'll give em some time to work the kinks out and muster up a better offer. 256kb up is barely enough to buffer 6mb down.

That setup fee is ridiculous. Even with the faster uploads...I'm going to hold off for now. If the setup fee wasn't there, I'd probably jump in.

Al, I just called about 30 minutes ago. It is in our Charleston Area supposedly also the Beckley area and we already knew about Parkersburg.

I was hoping that it would be the 1Mbps up that they said earlier in the summer but 768k will be a welcome burst over my paltry 180-240k range.

They are also charging me the $70 "Install Fee".

Watch what they are doing closely because I might be going to the Attorney General's Office about this fee because I suspect nothing will be installed.

My modem supports 43Mbps/10Mbps so they better not say anything about a new one.

Figured I would get false info anyways. Yeah they can kiss my ass with that fee and paying $30 extra a month? No i pay to much already for a shoddy service.

I don't know what happened but my speed increased.
I wonder if they are still going to charge me a $69 set up fee?

I take it they have not come to your house either?

Mine have increased without a visit from them although nothing like yours has.

As usually we both tested out of NY so I wonder if your cable run is just better quality because your uploads always kill mine.

Check out that upload from speedtest.net

Well, just called to see if the service of 12/768 was available. Was told that it was offered in my area, but there would be a $69.95 "upgrade" fee for the technician to come out and check the lines to make sure that my lines were compatible and capable of receiving the 12 meg signal.

I inquired further about this fee---the rep states that it is an install fee...I asked her what type equipment are they installing since I had the telephone modem installed back in August. The rep goes on to say that she isn't sure what exactly it is but she thinks its a cable coming from the splitter (which I don't have since the cable is a direct run from the pole to the modem) to inside of the home to the modem itself. She said that SL is responsible for the lines from the pole but not inside the home. She thinks that this cable is a coax/fiber optic cable combined into one. I asked her if this was a type of cable that I could go down to the local electronics store and purchase on my own---she said that she didn't know (not that I expected her to anyways).

I said that I would pass until SL realizes that this fee is unjustified to the consumers and they would be losing customers and deter customers from upgrading due to this ridiculous fee. She didn't seem too concerend (which I didn't expect anyway).

So add me to the list to those folks who believe that we are getting shafted up the 'ol bum (which isn't a bad thing sometimes) but this time I won't take it voluntarily.

I think she's confusing a hybrid fiber-coaxial network with standard coaxial cable.

There are very few people, if any, that aren't using DOCSIS 2.0 compliant modems. I think Suddenlink is just trying to pass the cost of the upgrade onto the customers. Hopefully, the "upgrade fee" will disappear after they dig themselves out of the hole.

They are supposed to come out on Thu. I will not pay the $69 set up fee no one ever came out. I canceled my thu appt just now. So no $69 set up fee for me. The tech said the reason they come out is to verify the line quality. I guess my 3 days with consistant 12/800 speeds verified it.

I haven't further inquired about the service, but gathering from what I've read- simply because they didn't make the truck roll doesn't mean I wouldn't anticipate the fee. I hope I'm wrong, but I'd be a lot more surprised if it didn't show up in the next bill than if it did.

I called Suddenlink at around 5 PM and asked about the 12/768 connection and they said that "We will offer the 12 Meg connection soon in your area. Please call back later."

If they ask me to pay a $70 fee I will simply refuse. What do they think I am made of money?

But yea, its not available in Wayne, WV and outlaying areas serviced by Suddenlink.
