~$40-50/month for broadband isn't expensive considering the salaries and cost of living in the N.Y. metropolitan area.

sorry to say but in Manhattan the triple play is 156. a month. that's without HD, only 2 premium channels and without renting any on demand movies. To expensive. I have no choice. Verizon does not offer FIOS here yet and even in areas where they do they keep both services similar in price.

I get triple play for $138/month which isn't bad and it includes a DVR, Movies and 2 HD boxes with FIOS, plus a free LCD HDTV, heh...

But we're talking about broadband here... I think broadband is a relatively good deal... For $40-50-60/month you can get a nice connection in the NY area.

Here in Japan we pay about US$60 a month for 100Mbps/100Mbps FTTH. (My measured speed is about 86Mbps.) Businesses can opt for 1Gbps/1Gbps FTTH service for about $400 per month. FTTH service is generally available within a 3 mile radius of a telephone CO (about 80% of the population, IIRC).

Of course, all of the ISPs offer first year teaser discounts. I chose to pay $40 for each of the first 12 months. Other ISPs offer two or three months free, instead. The ISPs try to squeeze profits out of add-on services like TV over internet (miserable satellite-like channel choices and poor package values) and VoIP ($0-5 per month, but you pay 2.5 cents per minute for every domestic call and more for international). For raw internet connection though, I don't know of a better value anywhere in the world.
