Anyway, I get a kick out of these "objectives:" quote: 1. The creation of an organized national broadband strategy with measurable benchmarks.
Why is this needed? This group already knows that our broadband "sucks." quote: 2. The development of policies that ease the transition from analog to digital.
Analog to digital what? Do these clowns even know what they are talking about? quote: 3. A plan for closing the digital divide and bringing broadband to those who can most benefit.
What digital divide? We have people on welfare living in furnished apartments with hardwood floors and 60" TVs already. -- Only SHATNER is Kirk. |

| reply to mglunt To be like those poor impoverished socialists that wear nice clothes and own nice houses and drive nice cars. That would be a terrible thing to go along with broadband.
I would think that the average of 30% or so federal income tax along with various state sales taxes plus those property taxes that are annoying puts us up pretty high too but I guess that's not your point. Socialism = high taxes so we are good, they are evil right? |

| reply to mglunt ha... ya know, as much as i was raised to distrust governments in general, i think that the design/building/implementation of a nationwide government funded fiber optic infastructure would actually do this country a lot of good. Here's Why. 1) far. far. less. waiting for buildout. 2) even the playing field a bit as far as service providing goes, as EVERY ISP would have to buy their time wholesale from the government. yeah. it'll never happen, of course, but that's part of the reason that so many other countries have "cheap" broadband. tho, the 40-50% tax rate statement seems a bit high to me, i'd place it closer to 30-40%... though, on top of that, the american 40 hour workweek is considered "insane" by most of the rest of the world, so go figure. -- -- i used to belive in people. then i worked in telcom. it burned out my naivety |

Gee, how much do you pay here in the United States between State and Federal income taxes, local property taxes and sales taxes? It seems that here in New York we have to work at least half a year to pay all the taxes we owe and we do not get all the benefits the "socialist" countries get. |

A president can't seek more than 2 consecutive terms. I don't live in the USA, but I'm pretty sure that's what I have heard many times before. I do live in the U.S., and you are correct. The maximum is two 4-year terms and 10 years. Why the 10 years? Well, if something happens to the president the vice president takes over the remainder of the term. If there's fewer than two years left, that vice president can still have two terms, theoretically.
Funny thing is, back in the day it was the Republicans who pushed for that law, in response to FDR, who got elected four times and died in office during his fourth term. Truman took over, though since three years remained in that term, Truman could only be elected once, since a second time meant 11 years, which would violate the new law. |

| reply to firephoto I honestly don't know which is worse, lazy welfare mamas or filthy-rich investors that shop around looking for some city willing to build a free factory, give them free land, water, sewer and 50 year tax breaks. Of course, the city has to tax the hell out of all the $10/hr employees to pay for it all. At the end of the day I guess it doesn't matter, it's always the W2 wage earner that pays the freight for both groups of blood-sucking leeches. |
