Can I put battery backup on a charter telephone modem

If and when charter is allowed to offer telephone service in my area, Au Gres, MI can I use a battery backup system to keep the phone service working during power outages. I hope that the problem with centurytel is solved and they are allowed to offer it soon.

At the very least you could get a computer UPS and keep the device plugged into that...since it's such a low wattage/amperage (I always get those two confused) it should be able to keep it running for at least a few hours.

I think they might come with a battery backup though, at least I thought the Arris Touchstone my aunt got from them had a slot for one anyway.

As matt314159 See Profile suggested, you can use a retail UPS system to run the telephone MTA in-case of a power outage.

Charter does offer battery backup solution (the tech will install a MTA with an internal battery slot + battery) for $40.

WOW , since the Arris and Motorola COME WITH BATTERY in the box. I find it hard to justify adding $40 charge to snap a battery in place. It is standard on all installs where I am. I have been installing batteries (1 per device is all there is now) for 2 years now. This from the greedmonger people call Comcast.

The standard MTA installed is the Arris TM502A -- it has no battery slot. The TM502G and battery is used should the customer want that capability, at at the additional cost as I described.

It's not as simple as saying it costs $40 just to snap in a battery. The battery alone costs $35 directly from Arris, not including shipping.

Just be aware that there are battery backups in Charter's neighborhood nodes as well, when the power goes out, to keep the system up until power is restored.

If the power is out long enough, the nodes will drop when the battery backups they contain are exhausted. At that point you would lose your phone connection regardless of whether you had a battey backup or not.

You are hedging your bet with a battery backup that the power outages you will experience will be shorter than the shortest run time of any battery backup in the link.

That being said, I run battery backups for the phone and internet boxes, as well as my computer, and for the most part, they get me through the small outages.

That's where the portable generators come in.

When the power is out for more than a day they usually put a portable generator at what I call a substation. That should take care of the nodes if I am not mistaken.

Generally, they don't wait that long to start placing generators.

The "substations" you are referring to are Standby Power Supplies. With proper maintenance they can power a node for almost 8 hours on battery back-up. We usually get generators in place long before they die or power them with a inverter from a service vehicle.
