[General] The 5 GB Limit

I just wanted to know if anyone ever experienced going over Verizon's 5 GB monthly download limit. From what I've heard, Verizon would cut your broadband connection on their BroadbandAccess network down to 200 kbps or less depending on how abusive one was with their bandwidth.

The throttling wouldn't affect me eitherway since I can only get 144 kbps max because I can only get the NationalAccess connection out where I live. But, I at least wanted to know if there was anyone here who ever went through such throttling with Verizon.

I just ordered the service and the rep told me the 5G limit was real. That would be about 2 good games though Steam.

I hope the service I just ordered is faster than 114Kbps (bits per second). Did you mean 114KBps (bytes per second)? I don't think 114 Kbps would be worth 59.95 per month.

Actually, Verizon's Terms of Service prohibit you from playing online games unless you want your account terminated. Anything which is bandwidth intensive to do like peer-to-peer downloads and online gaming will result in your account with Verizon Wireless being terminated. If those are two things you like regularly doing, then I suggest you either put up with the limits or switch over to Sprint (which is more tolerant of what you can do with its wireless services and has no limit with how much you can download monthly).

I said that the connection speed for Verizon's NationalAccess network maxes out at 144 kbps. But, the highest I'm ever able to get is 120-122 kbps for upload and download speeds. This makes it quite difficult for me to intentionally go over the cap if I wanted to do it.

Verizon Wireless has touted that their bandwidth speeds can be as high as 1.5 Mbps for down speed and 800 kbps for up speed in EVDO Rev A areas. In EVDO Rev 0 areas, it can be as high as 400 to 700 kbps for down speed and 60 to 80 kbps for up speed. You should check out Verizon Wireless's web site to check for coverage of their speeds in your area.

Pleas excuse my stupid question, but the only stupid question is the question un-asked.

Have you downloaded and do you use DRTCP?

I don't know of the program. What does it do?

At the very top of this page, click on "tools". That will open a page where you can receive many options. Download DRTCP and save to desktop. You can change a number of things using DRTCP, but the most important is your receive window.Read the FAQ about DRTCP. Any time you change a setting in DRTCP you will need to click on "save" and reboot to save those settings.

Then run the "Tweak" test from the same page, and it will reccommend settings to change in DRTCP to speed up your connection.

Hope this helps you.

Just tried using the Tweak test. The analysis portion of the test keeps timing out and I get a comment saying the analysis server for the tool is offline.

You might want to go to »java.com and download the most recent version of Java.

Do you have windows firewall enabled? If so, disable it. Zone alarm and some security settings will prevent the test running.

I can attest to the limitation on the account... I was not made aware that their "unlimited" plan is bs... they limited me to 200kbps today, but I plan on continuing to fight them over it. My contract and bills say unlimited...

Unlimited calls, yes. But Verizon Wireless has clearly stated nowadays that their data plans go as high as 5 GB monthly. Let's not forget that besides having your bandwidth throttled after going after 5 GB that they will now penalize you 49 cents for each megabyte you over 5 GB in a month.

Yes, I got in before the 5gb then charge you out the wazoo tactics fortunately. Unfortunately they never mentioned any limits and was assured by a rep via the phone I was on the unlimited plan so there was nothing to worry about during the trial period.

I'm just curious....... I was trying to help your speed about a week ago, and you kinda vanished. Did you ever get the "Tweak" test to run?

At one point, I managed to get results. But, I forgot to copy every bit of detail that came from the test. So, I just made some tweaks off whatever I had in front of me via DrTCP which got my downspeed slower than it would normally be so i had to set everything back to default. Ever since that time even with disabling my firewall and tweaking PeerGuardian to allow me to run the test, the Tweak test still says that the server used to analyze reults was down after the 20 max seconds that it would take to process the results.

I don't have time during the week to do the Tweak test. I'll try it this weekend when i'm not so busy.

Everyone's settings are different, but just to satisfy my curiosity, try these settings.

Just made the changes. My downspeeds for downloading got a slight boost and certain web pages I often have trouble loading up load up quicker.

Good! When you find time to run the Tweak test, it might reccommend you change your TCP receive window, but everything else should remain the same.
Good luck!
