I'll bet somewhere within the signup page that's currently 404 you'll have to agree to the use/sale of your email info. This is more likely given that the Computer Active site is not the organization giving out the free AVG.

I'm wondering what the nasties are that will be included in the download other than the app itself.

| I gave it a try on my wife's computer that had the free version. I had no problem installing over the free version. The Pro license is good until 1 December 2008 after which it says you can purchase a new license at a discount.
The main advantage I see over the free version is that it accesses faster update servers and you can schedule multiple daily updates.
The main disadvantage is that the license will expire in a year. | |

I agree,why would anyone use this program ,with all the FPs and bad test results? In my view, and according to many users who use AVG free, and looking at the tests of AV Comparatives, I would have no problem choosing AVG. The AVG AM includes the AVG AS module, and I am not sure if the free offer version does include that. However, along with SS it is an excellent choice.
Essentially all of the folks I personally know, who are not using the OEM AV, use AVG free. I do not know a single one who has been infected. If one keeps Windows updated and the security applications also, then AVG is plenty good enough for the normal user. If one wants to see how he can get infected, and then how the applications will clean the system then AVG is not the best choice.
However it was rated Advanced in the on-demand tests by AV.
I do not think the bad mouthing of AVG is justified based upon my personal observations of other users who stay clean.
The offer is an excellent one, and if I were in need of an AV and especially a freebie I would latch on to this offer.

AVG Anti-Malware was the version tested on AV Comparatives. Not AVG Pro. AVG Anti-Malware has the Ewido anti-malware engine incorporated into the AVG Pro program. So, the detection level of AVG Pro would be lower.

IN spite of that all the folks I know use only AVG free and have been free of infections for years.

I think I'll stick with my Avira Antivir PersonalEdition Premium.
Although, for those folks who don't currently have an AV or for the ones who are using a free version of another program, it might be worth a download.

Most AV comparison sites give it decent grades.
