Whew! Good thing I saved it to my desktop earlier. Now they required you to put in a username and password to download it. |

| said by Sindows 7 :anyone try the sweeper yet? I really dont wanna see any new services or realtime protection......... Yes, I tried it. You probably won't like it. It automatically runs at startup, installs a service and provides real-time protection. You can prevent it from running at startup by unchecking a dialog box. However the service will still run at start-up even if the program itself isn't loaded.
I still have it installed, but will probably remove it soon. When running in real-time, it seems to slow my computer some and also doesn't seem to be completely stable. I got a few explorer.exe faults when it was running, that may have been caused by SpySweeper.

This free version of Spy Sweeper could very well be considered ADWARE. Each time when checking for updates it goes to the webroot product website.
Network: option when tested on a 3 gig harddrive with 1000mb of ram took 100 percent CPU useage. Although this was not constant. This sort of behavior certainly would not help the health of any CPU.
Updates: none in five days. Obviously this product updates is terribly lacking considering how many new exploits hit the internet each day.
False Postives: The program shows two cookies on my test computer although there are none.
Summery: Definitely I would not purchase Spy Sweeper. Also, due to the "Adware" aspect that has been thrown out to the un-suspecting public with this free version offer I would not ever purchase any product by this vendor in the future no matter if it was the greatest thing in the world. |

Glad I downloaded mine before it got too crazy. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

When you do manual update check it will check for the latest definitions and it will start your browser so it can check if you have the latest program version and if not it will provide a link to download it. Automatic update check will only check for new definitions.
I don't use this free version but I did have the paid version and it worked OK. The only problem is they bundle ASK toolbar with the install and it's pre-checked. |

| Here's one review of Spy Sweeper 5.5 that I happened to run across in my travels (Yeah, I know...it's PC World, so take from it what you want).
said by PC World : A step down from last year's version 5.0, the newest Spy Sweeper provides good behavior-based detection, but it had trouble with adware and spyware disinfection.

"...German research company AV-Test.org conducted the malware portion of our tests, bombarding the applications with samples of current adware and spyware. AV-Test.org gauged the products' ability to recognize about 110,000 inactive adware, spyware, and rootkit samples. ..."
FWIW Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.2 test results at Malware-Test Lab were not spectacular.
As I'm sure you (and most others here) are aware, tests are only as relevant as to the testing methods and samples used. |

| reply to Stem Bolt I got spy sweeper here the family version(tri install) with sophos anti vi I think it is. I also have the standalone spy sweeper too. I have run it on both XP and Vista. Not running it now though. IMHO opinion its not as good as it used to be. Hogs more resources and its defaults can really "lock the system down". Though for unknowing click and shoots this can be good. |

Okay. That explains everything. Well I think I'll take the opinion of »www.av-comparatives.org/ on this one first. Aug. 2007. Seems to hold it's own quite well with the big boys.

| reply to ZZZZZZZ said by ZZZZZZZ : quote: I think AVG is the worst AV software out there. In tests I have watched it let stuff Symantec, NOD, and others catch, right on through.
I agree, why would anyone use this program ,with all the FPs and bad test results? In my view, and according to many users who use AVG free, and looking at the tests of AV Comparatives, I would have no problem choosing AVG. The AVG AM includes the AVG AS module, and I am not sure if the free offer version does include that. However, along with SS it is an excellent choice.
Essentially all of the folks I personally know, who are not using the OEM AV, use AVG free. I do not know a single one who has been infected. If one keeps Windows updated and the security applications also, then AVG is plenty good enough for the normal user. If one wants to see how he can get infected, and then how the applications will clean the system then AVG is not the best choice.
However it was rated Advanced in the on-demand tests by AV. I do not think the bad mouthing of AVG is justified based upon my personal observations of other users who stay clean.
The offer is an excellent one, and if I were in need of an AV and especially a freebie I would latch on to this offer.

AVG Anti-Malware was the version tested on AV Comparatives. Not AVG Pro. AVG Anti-Malware has the Ewido anti-malware engine incorporated into the AVG Pro program. So, the detection level of AVG Pro would be lower. -- Dr. Web + BOCLEAN: Anti-Malware + Router/SPI |
