I just was making a point of noting that AVG Free, AVG Pro, AVG Anti-Malware have no rootkit detection for those users that only use these programs for their computer security. For those users who don't use a layered approach as you and I do. <br><br>I would suggest AVG users consider adding another anti-malware program to cover for the lack of rootkit detection in AVG.<br><br>Rootkits are a very real and present threat to computer security. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/658312"><b>danny9</b></A> : I'm aware that AVG AM was used in the tests and I agree with you that without the AM it would score lower.<br>As far as the rootkit detection, I don't think I'd fully trust any AV fully with that job.<br>I use the layered approach and was aware at the time of its capabilities.<br>I did not not start using AVG because it was the best av, but for a combination of reasons including the smoothness of its operation, low resources and a totally trouble free operation. Something I did not get with the so called top av's. You probably won't like it.  It automatically runs at startup, installs a service and provides real-time protection.  You can prevent it from running at startup by unchecking a dialog box. However the service will still run at start-up even if the program itself isn't loaded. <br><br>I still have it installed, but will probably remove it soon.  When running in real-time, it seems to slow my computer some and also doesn't seem to be completely stable.  I got a few explorer.exe faults when it was running, that may have been caused by SpySweeper.<br><br> ]]></description>

I had been using Symantec Corporate AV for several years, but it allowed a trojan infection of my computer that actually hijacked the Symantec email proxy.  No scans by Symantec could locate or fix the problem.  I downloaded the free AVG and it detected and cleaned the trojan during the install. Symantec claimed for months that there was no infection of their product, but oddly a few months later they issued an update to correct it.  I will never, EVER, trust Symantec for anything again.  <br><br>AVG does what I need, doesn't get in the way, and doesn't affect my computer performance.  I've installed the free version on several friends computers now, and I use the Pro version myself.]]></description>

The Pro license is good until 1 December 2008 after which it says you can purchase a new license at a discount.<br><br>The main advantage I see over the free version is that it accesses faster update servers and you can schedule multiple daily updates.  <br><br>The main disadvantage is that the license will expire in a year. ]]></description>
