| The Witcher (Simply Amazing) Mini Review
So I picked up the Witcher awhile back but wanted to wait for the big 1.2 patch that fixed a lot of problems with the game. After installing it I started the game up & started playing. Well let me first say this is NOT your average cheesy cRPG. This game is VERY complex in it's story line & game mechanics. For example you can literally spend hours reading books in the game that tell you how to mix specific potions & oils. Not only that the character development is very elaborate as well. But the combat is quite simple & really fun. After playing for about 17 hours I have to say this is the BEST RPG I have played in years. The beginning is a little dry but the story & side quests are really awesome. The game has a very cool adult theme with a lot of bad ass dialogue to choose from. The game kind of reminds me of Knight of the old republic meets Planescape Torment. If your looking for a great RPG that has a great story line and a bit complex this is your game. I have played a ton of RPG's in my time and I must say this is easily as good as the Fallout series & Planscape Torment in my opinion.

| reply to Techie714 I wanted to like it. But I stopped playing. The loading times got to me. And there wasn't enough direction. Not enough foward momentum. And I didn't like the fighting style.
I liked the story though. And the level design. And the chicks you could sleep with. |

| I really like it. The load times have been shortened quite a bit with the latest patch. The European games definitely do less hand holding when it comes to what you're supposed to do. STALKER was like that too, but they're both really deep games that are a lot of fun. |

| reply to Techie714 I agree with the OP. I've been playing this game lately (now that finals are done) and I've been loving it. Loading times aren't really that bad. Though my 4GB of RAM and fast HDDs may have helped.
I disagree on how the game doesn't point you towards what you're supposed to do, though. Just open your journal, go to quest, then filter for primary quests only. The quest tracking is also helpful.
Now, I must go back to racking up nasty combos with fast-style fighting. |

| reply to Techie714 Yep, the load times are very reasonable now. That patch was amazing.
The combat is amazing to watch. And you have to love the death blows, combos and shooting blood.
The environmental detail is amazing too. Little things like people running under cover when it starts raining, or running into a main character on the road because it's 5PM and they're traveling from their 'office' to home. People don't just change locations at different times - they follow paths to a new location, and you can bump into them.
The alchemy system is just perfect as well. It's not too complicated or too simple and it actually feels like you "level up" in it as the story goes on.
I really love this game. I loose track of time when playing it like an MMO. |

ive heard a ton of good things about this game but i really didnt like STALKER very much and it become one of only a small handful of PCs games i started and purposely never finished. if i didnt like the openness or quest-like system of STALKER would i still enjoy The Witcher?
for me, if the game is in 1st person then it has to be an FPS or i quickly lose interest. i guess i figure FPS = shooting = run and gun, maybe some puzzles, but mostly mindless fun. i'll play an RPG but it has to be 3rd person.
i know almost nothing about the witcher at all besides the UK version having nudity. |

| reply to Techie714 Does this game have an ending, or is it like Oblivion, with a main quest to complete, but otherwise very open ended.
I did so many side quests in Oblivion, that I got tired of the game and never finished the main quest.
I saw this game on the shelf the other day and remember this thread. I wanted to get some more info on the game.
I just finished Half-Life 2 (all episodes) and Bioshock. I've come to the conclusion that I definitely like a game with a good story and an ending. -- We will always be much more human than we wish to be. |
