When we had FiOS installed a year and a half ago, they would leave the phones on copper on request. In an area with frequent power outages it would probably be desirable to do just that. We had the phones moved to fiber and the service has been much better than copper (far less line noise, and far fewer service calls, actually none since the cutover). YMMV.
The downside is that you probably wouldn't be eligible for the bundling discounts.

| reply to MatthewY Well i already do have Phone through verizon, And DSL. The reason i dont want the phone to be through fiber is because it seems unreliable, and we get alot of power outages here, around 3-5 a year, some lasts for a day or 2. Just nice to always have a dial tone and not rely on a battery.. |

| reply to MatthewY Other than the power problem, Phone though FIOS has been much more reliable than when it was on copper. I don't have FIOS Internet just phone. --

3 edits | reply to MatthewY I'll tell you why I would still want the copper lines. Anyone in NY probably could. We experienced 9/11 and the great NE blackout recently enough where nobody could reach anyone on cell phones. Power was all out...
Thankfully good ole copper phone lines were still working and I knew where to go to pick up my wife after hours of being stranded out there among the chaos.
I don't want VOIP at all (or at least just put it on my business line and not the main line) but I guess they're going to force it on us. I'll tell you what else... my work colleagues who call in on these lines get cut-off sometimes.. that makes them look real good with 30 people on the line.
I understand it's a better technology but dependable is a different story right now. |

FiOS isn't quite VoIP, at least if you're going to compare it to something like Vonage or Yahoo IM phone calls. 911 works exactly the same for FiOS as with POTS (copper). Think of the fiber as new copper. Same services just a different medium.
The biggest difference in that regard is that the fiber carries no power like copper. So if you're power goes out the battery that's installed with FiOS should keep you going for an hour or so (don't remember the exact). If anythings a disadvantage that's what it is, and if you have a generator or want to add another UPS you can help mitigate that. -- »www.fairtax.org |

4 edits | reply to noping sorry my fault... I haven't kept up. It will still be unavailable if the power goes out right? I know there's battery backup but I'll need at least 3 hours to be safe. How long is the backup?
EDIT>> ok I read the next post. 1 hour is not enough for regional emergency situations. I can live without power - I just need a working phone line. I guess at least you've given me the only fallback available. |

| reply to Lumberjack I didn't say it was VoIP, I was saying I won't rely on VoIP for 911 calls, which is why I'm stuck paying the ridiculous ~$40/mo for just local calling, which I believe is cheaper for the same service on copper. -- Hello...is there anybody in there? |

| reply to rh71 It is longer than 1 hour. Mine has been up at least the 3 hours your talking about, but there seems to be some variance depending on use.
If you want longer, it is trivial to buy a second UPS and put it in-line with the one that is on the system. That will even keep internet service up. When your UPS drain, the Verizon UPS kicks in and drops to just telephone.
There is even a button on the system that lets you "get a little more time", that is, once it is mostly drained and the telephone service is out, you go out to the installation, press a button and it give you another 30-60 minutes of telephone time.

Unless you have one of the newer types that shut off Automatically, and require you to go push the 'Emergency' button to make a phone call, you have less than 8 hours of standby time, until no phone service at all.
Forget about Internet or TV service, because that shuts off almost immediately.
If you have Voicewing, Vonage, or any type of VoIP service, your phone is dead if the power goes out, the ONT does not have a backup battery for Internet, or TV service.
Just hope you don't loose power while the BBU is doing a system test, where it runs the battery down part way to check it's capacity, because then you are starting out with a battery that is only half-full, or half-empty, depending if you want to be optimistic or pessimistic about it.
Get a decent sized UPS to plug the BBU into if you want anything close to a single day of FiOS Phone Service, when the power goes out. -- "Lithium is no longer available on credit" |

I'm all set in case of emergency - my trusty Honda generator, ONT connected to an UPS, several spare batteries and my mobile phones. |

| reply to deblin If your paying $40 a month for local, call and get a better plan. For $42 a month you can get unlimited local and long distance calling to anywhere in the USA and Canada. Another thing is bundle it with 3MB and get both HSI and Voice ofr $69.99. Just a suggestion.. |

Ah, I see. I'm the same way. Because I have young kids I'm stuck paying that cost as well else we'd be just fine with cellphones and Yahoo and Team Speak .
