Traffic shaping timeline graph

Click for full size
I did a little experiment with a throttled Sympatico login, to plot a timeline of when the throttling occurs. I downloaded and seeded a torrent, with lots of downloaders so the upstream usage was quite steady.

I tested the upstream not downstream, I just didnt want to waste so much bandwidth over a 24hr period. But I think they get throttled equally. Here are the results.

Traffic shaping timeline (upstream)

2am-4pm - Unrestricted upstream 80KB/sec
4pm-6pm - Upstream starts to drop to around 60-65KB/sec
6pm-12am - Upstream gets throttled heavily around 35KB/sec
12am-1am - Upstream drops a bit more below 30KB/sec
1am-2am - Upstream goes back to about 60-65KB/sec
2am-4pm - Unrestricted upstream 80KB/sec

I left the torrent seeding for another day, and it's nearly a carbon copy of yesterday... So it looks to me like it's not a case of "traffic management when the network is overloaded", they just do it everyday at the same time...

That would make sense. I doubt their network was ever overloaded. This is just another way to nickel and dime their customers by saving a few pennies here and there on bandwidth.

Thanks for the update HiVolt, now I know when I can download some movies I have been waiting to get...as long as I do it from 2 AM onwards I should be okay. Thanks again.

Don't we all love Bell

couldnt they have made a system that "managed" dynamically according to network load?

It's because that's when it's an issue...which is roughly at the same time every day.

What about saturday and sunday???? In theory we should be throttled both on those days around the clock. Weekends are prime time for net users.

Maybe for you and a few others, but believe it or not, weekends see the same usage patterns as a weekday.

I bet they made it 'peak times' so that they can change it whenever they want. Eventually, 'peak times' will be all the time.

Anyone know how long it takes you to get marked?

I am doing a favor for a friend and it's going to involve about 60gb of data transfer for about 2 weeks only. I don't usually do torrent work but I need to at this time.

My upload's capped at 10kb/s, as I only need the download.

I don't understand this, I thought we are being throttled for the DL speed, I usually can UL 30KB/s but the DL is usually cap at 30KB/s - 60 KB/s also...

Yup, full to 60 to 30, bit at 25, then 30, back to sixty and full again. Precisely my findings.

It is an automatic system, whenever the network starts to get congested the traffic shapers kick in. Not that complicated chief.

So you are saying the network gets automatically congested every day at 6pm, and magically uncongests itself at 2am? Come on...

We know that the usage is high during those hours, but the trend here suggests that its done on a timed basis, regardless of the network congestion.

Timed for peak usage ... quite likely ... but those times could vary if it was found appropriate is what they're saying.
