Go try unplugging that battery backup and tell us how many 'DAYS' it lasts.

Unless you have one of the newer types that shut off Automatically, and require you to go push the 'Emergency' button to make a phone call, you have less than 8 hours of standby time, until no phone service at all.

Forget about Internet or TV service, because that shuts off almost immediately.

If you have Voicewing, Vonage, or any type of VoIP service, your phone is dead if the power goes out, the ONT does not have a backup battery for Internet, or TV service.

Just hope you don't loose power while the BBU is doing a system test, where it runs the battery down part way to check it's capacity, because then you are starting out with a battery that is only half-full, or half-empty, depending if you want to be optimistic or pessimistic about it.

Get a decent sized UPS to plug the BBU into if you want anything close to a single day of FiOS Phone Service, when the power goes out.

Mine has been up at least the 3 hours your talking about, but there seems to be some variance depending on use.

If you want longer, it is trivial to buy a second UPS and put it in-line with the one that is on the system. That will even keep internet service up. When your UPS drain, the Verizon UPS kicks in and drops to just telephone.

There is even a button on the system that lets you "get a little more time", that is, once it is mostly drained and the telephone service is out, you go out to the installation, press a button and it give you another 30-60 minutes of telephone time.

FiOS isn't quite VoIP, at least if you're going to compare it to something like Vonage or Yahoo IM phone calls. 911 works exactly the same for FiOS as with POTS (copper). Think of the fiber as new copper. Same services just a different medium.

The biggest difference in that regard is that the fiber carries no power like copper. So if you're power goes out the battery that's installed with FiOS should keep you going for an hour or so (don't remember the exact). If anythings a disadvantage that's what it is, and if you have a generator or want to add another UPS you can help mitigate that.

When we had FiOS installed a year and a half ago, they would leave the phones on copper on request. In an area with frequent power outages it would probably be desirable to do just that. We had the phones moved to fiber and the service has been much better than copper (far less line noise, and far fewer service calls, actually none since the cutover).
YMMV.

The downside is that you probably wouldn't be eligible for the bundling discounts.
