. . According to the pdf, the firmware is MS certified.
Now you're really scaring me!

J/K. Thanks again.
I'll give it a shot in a little while.

I'll be going into the modem options, selecting 'upgrade the device', and pointing it to the 'local' .upg file I downloaded.
Not the way I did it before, using the .exe file-- but it seems simple and logical enough.

Famous last words, I know.
Send a rescue party if you don't hear from me for a couple of days . . . .

. . It's been 4 days since I upgraded the firmware and it's operating smoothly. . . .
Well, it's been about twenty minutes since I upgraded, and I don't know what to think . . . .

It worked, it rebooted itself, I still have a connection, I have the new interface, and it apparently sees no problems.

The lights on my modem blink constantly now, however.
I don't know what to make of that. Any thoughts?

I haven't manually rebooted it again yet to see if that would make any difference.

There's a 404 error on the Westell page now (the earlier link), with no firmware or .pdf's available.
It's been that way since just after the last time I posted, so I actually had kind of a bad feeling about upgrading.
I went ahead and tossed caution to the wind, though, and now have this blinking light situation, which I must admit I don't care for in the least.

Thought and advice appreciated, thanks.

Which lights specifically? The lights on my 327W have done that ever since I got it a few years ago, specifically the E1, E2, ... lights and the Internet light. Presumably the former is due to activity on the corresponding devices, but I don't know why the Internet light does it. It's never been a problem.

Which lights specifically?
All of them. Westell 6100.
I just realized a bit ago there is suddenly constant incoming traffic to my machine. My software firewall is now blinking constantly also-- there is a ton of traffic constantly coming in and being logged from 192.168.1.1. This is why everything is blinking.

I don't like incoming traffic! Never had any before. My software firewall has always been quiet as a mouse. And there were no blinking modem lights before, as it wasn't sending anything to my machine.
I find this very disturbing.

WTF??
What do I need to do?
Anybody know what's going on here?
I've been all through the modem's options and don't see what's wrong or different.

And do I have an option to go back to the old firmware, if it should come to that? (Yes, I do. See post below.)

What does the logs say? It's probably LAN discovery that the new firmware includes. Do you allow ping within the LAN?

Do you know which port? Is it Port 4567?

I also just clicked on Port Forwarding and got hung up. It wouldn't take me to the page.

And have this crapola (Flash?) in the screenshot going on. Never did before.

No one has any thoughts or opinions on this?

I gotta admit-- this 'incoming from the router' is really bothering me.

Anyone have an opinion about what my chances are of reverting to the old firmware?
I still have the .exe installer on my machine.

You need to configure your software firewall to trust 192.168.1.1 or just allow ping coming from the LAN network.

As far as the router/modem's access, use IE.

Thanks, but the problem was just solved-- I reverted back to previous firmware. All is well.

We should always trust our instincts. My instinct told me there was going to be a problem with that firmware.

I'm happy to report, btw, that simply running the previous firmware .exe file was enough to revert it. I was afraid that might not be the case.

But once again, all is quiet on the software firewall front.
It may not be the ideal situation, but it's one that I'm happy with and will live with.

Thank you very much though, for your time and thoughts on this. I appreciate it very much.

Take care, and have a good one!
I'm having a much better one now!

Glad to here it worked out. Do you have a link to the old firmware?

It took me to the 4.4.3 update.

You could download a simulator for the new interface so that you could get a feel for me before making the plunge. Don't know how long the following link will last before Westell pulls it, because I don't think they intended to make it public.

Anyway, I tried it out, and I think I will stick with the previous 3.2.1 firmware. Aside from the different look (which I'm ambivalent about; the drop-down menus of the old interface allowed me to access some of the advanced settings with far fewer clicks), nothing new was added. The two new features that I had hoped for the most--static DHCP (which is easy to implement and is standard on just about any other router) and allowing for an override of the DNS settings even if DHCP is used for the WAN (to bypass that bloody annoying and invasive wildcard that Verzion arrogantly decided to stick in the root zone file of its default DNS servers)--are not present. And the removal of the help pages is a minor inconvenience, too.

Has anyone found a compelling reason to upgrade? (in case I missed something in the simulator) What about stability? Normally, my router can run smoothly for 1-2 months without rebooting, but if I do anything that involves a large number of connections (e.g., ed2k or BitTorrent), the router would crash and self-reset every few days, or sometimes even every few hours. Anyone know if there are improvements in stability under load in this new FW? (B90 model)

Don't know about stability. Will want to test that myself (since with the old firmware, it did auto-reset after a while when torrenting).

What I did notice was that you can now choose WPA2 under wi-fi security (put the radio button on WPA, then click the word "WPA" and you can choose WPA2 there). I don't remember this being in the old firmware (or did I just not look hard enough?)

That is correct including in the westells own product marketing material. It does not mention the newer wpa2 use.

heh. New issues with the firmware for Westell products? Say it isn't so. To tell you the truth, blocking out 'remote port : 192.168.1.1 ' . Do me a favor. Go to your command prompt, type in 'ipconfig' and look for your default gateway.

I upgraded and my stability greatly increased allowing me to switch to fast path. I like the old interface better but this one isn't bad either.

There used to be a simulator of the Westell branded firmware. Do you, or anyone, have that or a link to it?

Thanks
