Will want to test that myself (since with the old firmware, it did auto-reset after a while when torrenting).

What I did notice was that you can now choose WPA2 under wi-fi security (put the radio button on WPA, then click the word "WPA" and you can choose WPA2 there). I don't remember this being in the old firmware (or did I just not look hard enough?)

anon : You could download a simulator for the new interface so that you could get a feel for me before making the plunge. Don't know how long the following link will last before Westell pulls it, because I don't think they intended to make it public.

Anyway, I tried it out, and I think I will stick with the previous 3.2.1 firmware. Aside from the different look (which I'm ambivalent about; the drop-down menus of the old interface allowed me to access some of the advanced settings with far fewer clicks), nothing new was added. The two new features that I had hoped for the most--static DHCP (which is easy to implement and is standard on just about any other router) and allowing for an override of the DNS settings even if DHCP is used for the WAN (to bypass that bloody annoying and invasive wildcard that Verzion arrogantly decided to stick in the root zone file of its default DNS servers)--are not present. And the removal of the help pages is a minor inconvenience, too.

Has anyone found a compelling reason to upgrade? (in case I missed something in the simulator) What about stability? Normally, my router can run smoothly for 1-2 months without rebooting, but if I do anything that involves a large number of connections (e.g., ed2k or BitTorrent), the router would crash and self-reset every few days, or sometimes even every few hours. Anyone know if there are improvements in stability under load in this new FW? (B90 model)

Freddy : All,

I found the following on the Internet:

This is from microsoft Vista TechCenter:

-----------------------------------------------
Nobody can ping my computer

A common step in troubleshooting connectivity situations is to use the Ping tool to ping the IP address of the computer to which you are trying to connect. When you ping, you send an ICMP Echo message (also known as an ICMP Echo Request message) and get an ICMP Echo Reply message in response. By default, Windows Firewall does not allow incoming ICMP Echo messages, and therefore the computer cannot send an ICMP Echo Reply in response.

Enabling incoming ICMP Echo messages will allow others to ping your computer. However, it also leaves your computer vulnerable to the types of attacks that use ICMP Echo messages. Therefore, we recommended that you enable the Allow incoming echo request setting temporarily, and then disable it when it is no longer needed.

To enable ICMP Echo messages, create new inbound custom rules to allow ICMPv4 and ICMPv6 Echo Request packets.

To enable ICMP Echo Request for ICMPv4 and ICMPv6

1. In the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in, click Inbound Rules in the tree, and click New Rule in the Actions Pane.
2. Click Custom and click Next.
3. Click Echo Request, click OK, and then click Next.
7. Under Which local IP address does this rule match? and for Which remote IP address does this rule match click either Any IP address or These IP Addresses. If you click These IP addresses, specify the IP addresses and click Add, then click Next.
8. Click Allow the connection, and then click Next.
9. Under When does this rule apply?, click the active profile, any or all profiles (Domain, Private, Public) to which you want this rule to apply, and then click Next.
10. For Name type a name for this rule and for Description an optional description. Click Finish.
11. Repeat steps for ICMPv6, selecting ICMPv6 for Protocol Type instead of ICMPv4.
---------------------------------------------------

In the screen where you click 'Echo Request', I had to go back and select all of the settings (messages) to make it work, but after it was done, WinVROC could ping the servers again, and those responding to it showed green as usual.

To open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, use the following steps:

1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.

3. In Administrative Tools, double-click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

Regards,

Marko
----------------------------------------------------------

By Freddy: From that information, I think I'll leave my firewall alone. It seems that allowing incoming Echo ICMP requests can open up your computer to attack. At least that's the way I understand it. Now the last update (model numbers matching) I got from Verizon went without any hitch....And the process for this update went without any hiccups...

After the update as I was surfing the net I noticed that I was getting disconnected from the wireless router.....At first I thought that this was because of my crappy transceiver stats (which although low could still hold a connection)....After this happened numerous times, I decided to check the router to see what was going on...This is when I saw that the router was rebooting every 3 minutes or so....After numerous tries to reset (soft and hard-reset)...I have basically decided to give up on the router and just get a new one....So now basically, my 327w is stuck in a reboot loop and I have no physical or software way of resetting the router...Partial (Internet for 3 minutes) BRICK......

Maybe I am the only one with this problem....But just goes to show....As for me, I'm probably just going to try to get my hands on an 6100 and get a real wireless router....Oh well..

Another problem is that they make you click through warnings even if you're trying to look at a page that only shows information. It looks like they were too lazy to separate out the specific pages where config changes can be made and just put a warning upon entering any section containing at least one such page. For example, if you click on "System Monitoring" and then "Advanced Status", you have to click through a warning even though many subpages, such as "Transceiver Statistics", don't allow modifying anything.
