Wow, Xbox 360 is LOUD?

I just bought a 360 tonight along with Mass Effect. When I load Mass Effect it seems like the DVD-ROM spins up and stays on high the whole time - it's LOUD AS HELL.

I purchased the Arcade version without a hard drive. If I add a hard drive will it allow the system to cache info to the HD and spin the DVD-ROM down so it's not so loud?

No it will still be loud, I have a drive and it's loud. I crank up the volume or wear headphones for just about every game I play. Mass Effect does seem to spin at high speed more than other games for some reason.

I don't know why but Mass Effect spins the DVD drive crazy loud on my 360. No other game I have played spins the DVD drive up and down like Mass Effect. To your question, the answer is no, having a hard drive will not cache the game to your hard drive and cause the drive to spin less.

My old 360 was loud but I got a Halo 3 360 and the DVD is much quieter.

That is probably because your new 360 has a different DVD drive inside. My 360 has a Samsung drive, and I think it is quite loud.

Mine has the Benq drive (per that site) and it sounds like an old Delta Black Label 80mm fan when it spins up.

I have found that I am able to eventually tune it out when I start really focusing on the game. Also, if I sit in a chair closer to the Xbox (also at a higher angle) it's MUCH quieter.

I think I just happen to be at the exact angle when sitting on my couch that directs the noise right to me which makes it seem unbearably loud.

I moved my 360 (new Elite, 175W, but not the quiet drive) so it is a little further away from me... and on a less hollow stand (the other one increased the vibrations way too much)... and it seems to be much better now.

Interesting, mine is sitting on top of my DVD player, which is sitting on a piece of glass, on metal legs, on the carpet.

What do you mean when you say 175W?

175 watts... meaning it has the new, supposedly cooler running Falcon chip. The older 360s needed a 203 W power supply which generate more heat resulting the Red Ring of Death on a lot of the 360s). The new cooler running ones only need 175 W (although the graphics part of the 360 till runs quite hot from what I understand)

Some of the new 360s still have old LOUDER DVD drives in them... although I am not entirely sold on the way people think the new DVD drives are getting into the things... I think it is purely random.

I bought Mass Effect last week agd I've also noticed some weird noises coming from the drive when playing the game. Does anyone else hear like a loud sound when the drive starts to load something new?

I never hear this sound in other games, but it seems as if maybe the drive is spinning or winding down and then the game needs more loading so it starts up again and you hear the sound as if gears are grinding or something.

It's weird. I don't hear this in any other game but Mass Effect and I'm beginning to worry it may damage my drive.

I definitely hear the drive seeking. Kind of a back and forth "raaaaw, waaaar" sound a lot. Someone in the official forums stated the game runs completely off the DVD and caches nothing to the hard drive. So perhaps that's why?

I don't think that the data on the Mass Effect disc was optimized correctly. It sounds like the commonly used data is fragmented all over the disc, and my drive always sounds like it's straining to search the disc for what it needs.

Forza 2 is like that too. Continuously spinning at high speed.

I thought it might be the result of trying to provide the on-disc audio soundtrack, so I switched to songs ripped to the HD. No improvement, the DVD drive still running flat out.

You know, around here it's like only on the full moon are the restrictions between the console game board and console tech board enforced...

First of all, congrats on your new 360! It's such a great system. Between standard games, arcade games, online play, streaming media, and all the other nice little things about the system - you should get a lot of great enjoyment out of it.

Things to know:

1) One of the major flaws of the 360 (as compared with the PS3) is that the 360 uses a standard DVD drive. A 360 disk can hold 8 gigs where a PS3 BluRay disk can hold around 50Gigs (25G single layer, 50G dual layer) for a single layer.

You'd think 8G for a 360 game would be enough but as an example - one of the first PS3 games "Heavenly Sword" used 8G just for the freaking audio alone! Not only does the PS3 allow for more game room, but it also allows for more and better (5.1) audio as were as extra content.

Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed and UT3 are examples of games were they came damn close to running out of disk space - I mean they were on the freaking edge.

The limits of DVD storage capacity are being tested, but will not be maxed out by Mass Effect. During a Q&A update, project director Casey Hudson confirmed that Mass Effect "is a monstrous game. In fact, there was a time -- not too long ago -- when we pretty much scoffed at the idea of fitting onto one disc. But, there's an art to optimizing the data that goes on a disc"; Mass Effect will fit onto a single disc -- "but just barely."

In short: the 360's limited disk size makes the DVD drive work like a mad dog in some games like Mass Effect. And the drives were already too loud in smaller games. One thing I love about the PS3 is it's an almost silent system. Using every trick in the book to get Mass Effect to fit on one disk made it have crap load times and IMHO way (WAY) to much drive access. On a PS3 they would have had no need to do that and they could have optimized the disk structure for better loading and access times.

2) 360's are much quieter when laying on their sides as opposed to standing up - it's a night and day difference with most systems.

3) For more "quiet" without restricting air flow, place the 360 on it's size on a flat hard surface. Then go to walmart in the dish section and purcase one of the thin rubber dish mats and stick it under the 360. This will help absorb some of the vibration with out restricting airflow (as opposed to carpet).

Good Luck! Mass Effect is such a great game.

I would consider that a major flaw of the PS3 actually. Sony forces you to pay for a more expensive drive that is only useful for watching movies. Microsoft allows us to pay less for the system and for those that want to watch HD movies they can pay extra for that.

One thing you forget is games can use multiple discs. For the PS2 you would frequently see RPG's released on multiple discs. Blue Dragon for the 360 is 3 discs. If developers find they're running out of space on a disc they can easily make the game multiple discs. Would I rather have it all on one disc and not have to get up? Of course, but I'm not going to say it's a major flaw and have that be the basis of which system I'd buy.
