FiOS coming to Durham, NC?

Verizon still says I can't get FiOS but tonight I noticed a new (to me) Verizon billboard on the Durham freeway advertising FiOS! Could the day be near?

Yea. I saw the billboard also. I had heard that due to red tape, they hadn't approved FIOS in the triangle. Wish it would get here soon.

@verizon.net

Spoke to a rep today, and was told that all the local loop work had been completed for southern durham and some of northern durham. Southern Durham (Southpoint / RTP area) will begin to get mailers within 2-3 weeks after they begin notifying those who asked to be notified.

Again, I was told TODAY, 1/10/08 that FIOS was within 1 month of full rollout. B/c of financial concerns, not every section would get immediate access, but 80% or so of the county would by early summer.

Fios TV, phone, internet. Plans for internet start at 5 down / 2 up for 29.99. So happy I can't stand it!

Could this even remotely be possible? Any one else able to confirm even seeing the billboards? Everything I've read (and of course, the info on FIOS is notoriously hard to come by) still says Verizon hadn't reached agreements with NC yet, that the fiber was not in place, yadda yadda etc.

Also, when I look at Verizon rollout press releases from as late as last month (Decemeber 2007), they don't even mention North Carolina.

»newscenter.verizon.com/press-rel···-in.html

With the latest crap being pulled by TWC, I decided to do my occasional FIOS search. The post above has me very hopeful (I live in the SouthPoint area), but I cannot find a single piece of corroborating data anywhere on the web, and I've already been through the incredibly painful experience of trying to find this stuff out by actually *calling* Verizon (shudder).

Anyone? Anyone? Anyone else even seen a billboard?

I'm also curious. Has anyone else seen these FIOS billboards? On what street?

Yes, I noticed the same billboard when I was home for the Christmas holidays visiting my family. I was very surprised to see a FIOS billboard, since I didn't think it was available, and I was thinking that Durham's status as an island of Verizon (formerly GTE) in the middle of AT&T (formerly BellSouth) would prevent FIOS from coming anytime time.

I believe that billboard was on the Durham Freeway heading towards RTP/the airport, but I don't remember the location as much as I remember seeing it.

AT&T is rolling out a thing called U-Verse in Raleigh and Chapel Hill; the only way that Verizon can compete is with Fios. Since I’m in the Embarq footprint I gotta make do with Time Warner’s severely overpriced 6 Mbps service.

Hey, if we vote Hillary Clinton in for president can we insist that she make fiber optic to all residences in the US mandatory?

OMG OMG OMG@@@!!!

Woohoo! I will sign up the day it's available downtown. Come on Verizon!

If anyone is willing to try to navigate the hellishness that is verizon's telephone customer service and get through to a local office (I can't spend that much time on it from work) to confirm any of this, I'll pitch in by driving the stretch of freeway after work that's supposedly got the billboards, and report back.

WOW, I came here to DSL reports in hopes of

A: TWC upping the bandwidth rates
B: FIOS availability in Durham!

I would take B in a heart beat...now the big question. We built a house in Southern Durham, but since we use VoIP(AT&T) we never connected a phone line. Will that be an issue?

@mindspring.com

I drove the Durham freeway eastbound from 15-501 all the way to I-40 last night, no FIOS billboards. (And they would have been pretty obvious, hardly any billboards there in the first place.)

I saw the billboard sign this morning on 147 on my way to work. It's been there for at least a month now. Hopefully they will be installing FIOS soon in my neighborhood!

I didn't notice the billboard when I was driving 147 from Broad St. (though that's not the exit name, darnit, Edit: it's the Swift Ave. exit) back towards I-40 this past weekend, but I forgot to look for it. I definitely saw it a month ago--when I was a passenger going from I-85 towards I-40. I forget exactly where it was....

Ok, guys... here's the deal. I posted a few weeks ago concerning FIOS launch here in Durham. First, there WAS a billboard on the Durham Freeway, going south, just past the Alston Ave exit (near the old walk-over bridge). It is now down. I did see another FIOS bb on hwy 70 goiing into Durham near Miami blvd, but don't remember where it was (maybe near Kemp's seafood).

Anyway...

I had a serious disruption of my DSL service back in January that caused me to get so mad at Verizon tech support that I - gasp - almost switched to TW. I work from home and my service was terminated accidentally by a cust serv rep and took 3 days to get back online. After numerous frantic calls to every support rep I could speak to trying to get it resolved, I found myself deciding to cancel my service and switch. Enter Bell-Atlantic

It seems that the general support lines are all managed by the verizon incomp tech support people, you know... "have you rebooted your modem? Yes? Ah, I don't know... it must me a Windows error. Have I helped you today? Goodbye" Anyway, a very friendly Level 3 / Tier 3 techie came on the line and spent an hour with me diagnozing the problem. She ABSOLUTELY knew what she was doing, and informed me that the upper level support people all work for Bell Atlantic, and that FIOS was actually their initial project, not Verizon. After the merge, Verizon took credit and began servicing the B-A coverage area 1st (look at the map, it makes sense).

Cut to the chase: I spoke with her at length concerning FIOS rollout and she informed me that she could not tell me anything further on her phone, as it was being monitored. But did call me from a private # later in the day to follow-up on my issue.

During that call I was told that the local loops had been completed and that launch plans were imminent (2-3 weeks). Marketing was culling Db files from people who had registered to be notified and would give them first shot. She gave me areas of the city that only a person involved would be aware of, and further stated that it may be that businesses in RTP might get the first shot, since almost all of RTP is in Durham Co. Evidentially alot of bus. in RTP use TW for broadband, and Fios/Verizon wants it back.

I wish I could give you more than that. I'm waiting on pins/needles wanting to sign-up, as the fastest speed I can get is around 1.2mbp via DSL. Southpoint bc of its proximity to RTP would be 1st, and then downtown and then northern Durham up Duke St (where other Verizon offices are located).

Odd thing, though... I've been getting a lot of calls from TW heavily pushing their Bundle package. I wonder if they know something is up.

Almost forgot: She did say that they try to keep things under-wrap until everything is in place to try and fight off competitive offers that lock people in to a longterm contract. Maybe that is why we haven't heard anything from the press yet?

One a side note, there are fiber lines sticking up out of the ground up and down MLK Blvd. I've seen them in other areas as well, but just saw those this past weekend, FWIW.

I currently work for Verizon selling Fios in Verizon wireless stores and I can tell you that we are opening one up in Durham within the next few months. I have not heard when Fios is coming to Durham but I can gaurantee that if they want us to open a location down there Fios is definitely coming very soon. Once I know more I will let you know where you can come and sign up at

I am SHOCKED to hear that the Durham police mis-understood and messed something up. As you can see from my username, I am a little biased when it comes to Durham PD. I can't wait for FIOS, I want the NFL Network....and do you know how hard it is to WOW and browse the internet at the same times with DSL???
