anon : Couple of things: Naked DSL / Dry loop DSL is available in this market. There are several different verizon websites where you can verify this, but here is the deal:

If you currently have a verizon land line active, meaning you have verizon phone service AND you have DSL, my understanding is that you will pay a premium cost (add $10 to your monthly fee) to drop the land line. I've spoken to a local office rep and a 3rd tier tech rep and was told conflicting reports on how it is done, but they both confirmed that it can be done. The conflict is whether or not you need a new line run to your house seperate from the current line. 3rd tier said No, local cust rep said YES. EIther way, though, it is available. If you don't have a land-line, it isn't a problem... you would just pay the higher fee

Regarding FIOS, all I can say is that something is up. Fiber "sprouts" are all over the city, and a close friend at TW has indicated that it isn't for TW. SO, if not them, then WHO? (for those unconvinced that it is happening).

Second, Verizon is now offering 7.1mb/2mb as a way of keeping current customers happy (ie. not switching to TW) while local fiber loops are completed.

Still unconvinced? Then why did Verizon privately try to run a Fiber trunk across a major highway (I-85 back in July) without notifying the local govt? B.c the airheads in city hall can't keep their traps shut. Why spend the money if you don't intend on using it?

Lastly, has anyone heard of MCI? Oh, that's right... VERIZON? We have a MAJOR Verizon presence in our backyard. 2 of the 3 major sectors of Verizon is located right here in RTP (MCI & multiple units of GTE). 85-90% of RTP businesses (not RTP acreage) are located in Durham Co and are serviced by Verizon. Why not upgrade the trunc and take advantage of the marketplace? Every other provider leases space from Verizon in this market (even TW... VOIP handled by MCI - I can't say any more about that), so wouldn't this make sense?

As I've said in other posts, even some of the FIOS call center people are clueless abot where it will be. You just have to know the right people. I alluded to a question that was posed to me about licenses and such being allowed by the state regulators. I don;t know anyone at that level, but it may be that the switch cann't be turned on b/c of state regulations not being passed. Anyone know anyone at that level and can verify?

anon : OK, Guys... Don't shoot the messenger. I have good news and bad news to report from the land of FIOS.

Bad news first: I spoke with my "inside friend" at Verizon again today. Evidently there are problems with permissions being granted to finalize the deal. What that means is that it may be a little longer before it comes, but it is still on the way. Someone here might know more about this than I do, but is NC not agreeing to give local telcos flexibility in offering cable over net?

Anyway, the good news is that, ready for this??? Verizon is quietly upping our speed options right now. Call 877-483-5898 and ask for Ultra-High DSL. If you qualify (and I was told that most of Durham does), then you can upgrade to 7.1mb/2mb for 39.99 for an annual contract. The link online does not give you this option and only offer 3mb as the highest package avail. However, I just signed up and am 3800' from the node. I was told that up to 6000' still qualified for Ultra-High, as long as you have ATM as your packet-type.

* Since this is a very new offering for this area, you may be a guinea pig for a few weeks while they flush out the bugs, but it should be better than what we've had until FIOS comes later this summer.

anon : Ok, guys... here's the deal. I posted a few weeks ago concerning FIOS launch here in Durham. First, there WAS a billboard on the Durham Freeway, going south, just past the Alston Ave exit (near the old walk-over bridge). It is now down. I did see another FIOS bb on hwy 70 goiing into Durham near Miami blvd, but don't remember where it was (maybe near Kemp's seafood).

Anyway...

I had a serious disruption of my DSL service back in January that caused me to get so mad at Verizon tech support that I - gasp - almost switched to TW. I work from home and my service was terminated accidentally by a cust serv rep and took 3 days to get back online. After numerous frantic calls to every support rep I could speak to trying to get it resolved, I found myself deciding to cancel my service and switch. Enter Bell-Atlantic

It seems that the general support lines are all managed by the verizon incomp tech support people, you know... "have you rebooted your modem? Yes? Ah, I don't know... it must me a Windows error. Have I helped you today? Goodbye" Anyway, a very friendly Level 3 / Tier 3 techie came on the line and spent an hour with me diagnozing the problem. She ABSOLUTELY knew what she was doing, and informed me that the upper level support people all work for Bell Atlantic, and that FIOS was actually their initial project, not Verizon. After the merge, Verizon took credit and began servicing the B-A coverage area 1st (look at the map, it makes sense).

Cut to the chase: I spoke with her at length concerning FIOS rollout and she informed me that she could not tell me anything further on her phone, as it was being monitored. But did call me from a private # later in the day to follow-up on my issue.

During that call I was told that the local loops had been completed and that launch plans were imminent (2-3 weeks). Marketing was culling Db files from people who had registered to be notified and would give them first shot. She gave me areas of the city that only a person involved would be aware of, and further stated that it may be that businesses in RTP might get the first shot, since almost all of RTP is in Durham Co. Evidentially alot of bus. in RTP use TW for broadband, and Fios/Verizon wants it back.

I wish I could give you more than that. I'm waiting on pins/needles wanting to sign-up, as the fastest speed I can get is around 1.2mbp via DSL. Southpoint bc of its proximity to RTP would be 1st, and then downtown and then northern Durham up Duke St (where other Verizon offices are located).

Odd thing, though... I've been getting a lot of calls from TW heavily pushing their Bundle package. I wonder if they know something is up.

The post above has me very hopeful (I live in the SouthPoint area), but I cannot find a single piece of corroborating data anywhere on the web, and I've already been through the incredibly painful experience of trying to find this stuff out by actually *calling* Verizon (shudder).

Anyone?
