3 edits | WiMAX or other 3G/4G I feel sorry for cities suckered into WiFi deployments. It's just not designed to be city wide. If city govts are willing to subsidize 3rd parties to build WiFi networks, they may as well subsidize Sprint/Clearwire to build out WiMAX in their city and offer discounts to those whose billing zipcode resides in the city.
Cities could offer light poles for WiMAX repeaters. They could install their own WiMAX repeaters on govt buildings and city-owned properties.
WiFi just doesn't cut it. I have EVDO and never have to look for a hotspot - anywhere. It's THE way to be connected metrowide, but at $60/month it's pricey. Subsidized access might be the solution. WiMAX is modeled in a way that city govts could more easily get involved in the deployment. If Intel has their way, you won't be able to buy a laptop w/out WiFi/WiMAX next year in the way you can't buy a laptop today w/out WiFi. |
