KoolMoe : See here for a brief overview:
»Re: How can I get FIOS cheaply? (e.g., STB configurations)

The service is definitely faster and more reliable. I had the 6.0/768 SE plan. I actually got maybe 5.0/640. With the FIOS 5.0/1.0, I get about 5.2/1.2, which is obviously much better, especially considering the cost.

The final straw for cutting the SE connection was trying to watch TV shows online (NBC.com, etc). The consistently stopped at various points, apparently long enough for the website player to figure the connection was lost and restart the show.
That hasn't happened once since switching to VZ. It *could* have been my router, but considering the cost savings, it wasn't worth troubleshooting.

I do miss my home hosting. It was nice to be able to RDP to my home computers, as well as have a few local websites. No huge loss, and I could always work around the FIOS dynamic DNS with something like the DynDNS service - but just haven't had the time to worry about it.

Phone and TV have generally been fine. We don't have any movie subscriptions (HBO, etc) so their VOD is *definitely* inferior to Comcast, but no biggie. The PQ is indeed excellent.

So the only real complaint is the billing. Will see how long that takes to resolve.
KM

My co-op building just signed a contract with Verizon for FIOS service, and I'm kind of curious -- the price of SP higher bandwidths (I'm 1.5up/maybe 600 down) keeps putting me off.

Here on the east coast, though, there's the rumor that Verizon will cut all copper into your place when they install the fiber (keeps out the competition, I guess).

Let us know how it goes!

KoolMoe : Just got off the phone from canceling my SE service. Almost painful to do after having these guys provide my broadband since 2001.

With FIOS here, I did just the TV portion for a few months and was generally pleased. After the $99 triple play promo, I just couldn't justify $100+ a month for 6.0/768 when I could get 5.0/1.0 at a third the price. It was mostly a cost-savings issue - though, believe me, I'm not real thrilled with moving to VZ as I generally don't like 'em...and I'll miss the static IP/open ToS from SE as well.

For the record, the speeds are actually equal since VZ seems to allow for that 'overhead' BS in their speed calculations. I get about 5125 down on VZ, which is about what I got from my SE DSL connection. It's nice to see a provider actually overprovision the service.

I wish SE, and Covad too, the best of luck. I was hoping they'd strike a reseller deal with VZ but have waited long enough, and am always looking to cut costs where possible.

Another loyal customer bought off by cheaper monopoly pricing. Ah well. I am an American after all!
KM
--
Don't Lie - Be Kind - Realize your Potential
