Help - how to play 1080p.mkv

I have read a number of guides - but none were able to address the problem that I get only with 1080p in Vista - the playback is choppy :'(

Can someone tell me how they were able to play it?

What software + setup does one need to play 1080p smoothly?

I can play it - but it's choppy

(never happened with 720p)

I think the problem is with my playback software (player) / maybe even codec / and OS setup (Vista Vista Ultimate 64 :'( ) ...

I have a very powerful and modern machine - I do not think that is the problem (HP HDX9010NR - it has ATI Radeon HD 2600XT 256MB, 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz)...

update:
How should I set up the OS - Vista Ultimate 64?
Maybe I should disable some settings? Maybe disable some theme or so - I have a feeling the issue is someplace here...

How should I configure the hardware?
Should I configure the video card in any special way... ?
The video drivers are what came as by default out of the box - maybe I should upgrade them? I have a feeling this maybe the secondary likely cause of the issue...

What player should I be using?
(I tried Media Player Classic, GOM Player, BS Player, VLC and others...)

What codec should one be using?
(I have The CCCP : Combined Community Codec Pack - www.cccp-project.net )

Any tips, tricks, links, suggestions are much appreciated...

Thank you...

Usually, when a HD video is choppy, it's because the processor or video card can't keep up with the bitrate.

Play it again and see what the processor is running at.

MKV will play on VLC:

What encoding was the video encoded with? h.264?

You can try updating you video card drivers, and then un-install CCCP and re-install it and see if that helps.

Also CoreAVC should help with playback performance with h.264 encoded files, though you need to purchase it.

Quicktime, VLC, and MPC all work.

The "best" codecs at the moment are ffdshow and CoreAVC. 1080P files are very hardware dependant. If you can play 720P files but not 1080P files, then you are likely having hardware limitations.

"processor or video card can't keep up with the bitrate" possibly - but they should be able to - it's a $2500 PC

Specially if its an intel P4 chip. those step back their speed as they get warmer.

I had the same issues with 1080P .MKV. I'm now using CoreAVC as my codec for these and I haven't had any issue since then. I still use ffdshow for all the rest.

Other options or setup tweaks aren't necessary. You need the latest versions of ffdshow and/or CoreAVC for best results. If you cpu is reaching 70+%, you don't have enough cpu power. A dual core 2.2ghz machine is questionable, regardless of what you paid for it.

I have the same machine as u, I was having the same problems with a 1080p movie and vista32. I've got an nvidia sound card, 2.2 ghz duo. Increase performance settings via nvidia control panel. Create new power options with processor speed running at 100% for minimum and maximum settings. Open the movie file with vlc player, and using task manager, right click the process vlc.exe and set priority to real time ( you have to first click --show processes from all users-- to be able to select this option.) Also make sure vlc prefrences are set right (>>input/codecs>>other codecs>>ffmpeg>> select advanced options, the second hurry up, and set skip the loop filter for h.264 decoding to all. This is the only thing that worked for me. Some rough shading every now and then (almost unnoticeable on 1920x1200 screen) but perfect video and audio transitions. The problem is mainly with cpu speed here but can be compensated for. everytime vlc player is started u have to set it to real time again though, that's it. might not need as many speedups as I did, but I'm satisfied enough not to mess with it more.

I use CoreAVC with my Core2Duo 2.0ghz Mac Mini (under Vista). I'd say 98% of the time 1080p MKV plays fine. Every once in a great while there will certain video sequences that drop some frames because the CPU can't keep up. Usually due to lots of highly active "randomness" (water, static) in the frame. I think this was with an older single-core version of AVC, from what I understand newer Pro version can take advantage of my dual cores.
