| "Campus Based Digital Theft Prevention" - Speak Out
Section 494, Campus-Based Digital Theft Prevention, of H.R. 4137 The College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007 would require universities to prevent online file sharing of copyrighted information on their networks. It would require that the universities document their prevention techniques, including filtering and purchasing subscriptions to services such as Napster for every student. Universities that don't comply can have the Federal Financial Aid for all students cut off.
The bill is at an important point, it was referred to the Committee of the Whole House just before the holiday recess, and will be voted on shortly after Congress reconvenes on January 3. If you wish to prevent passage of this bill with this provision included, now is the time to write your Representative in Congress. A sample letter which can be copied and easily edited is attached. Write your own letter, or copy this one and edit the areas underlined as required. You can find the correct address and the name of your representative by going here and entering your 9 digit zip code. There is a link on that page that will give your 9 digit zip code, if you enter your street address. To have maximum effect, the letter should be to your representative, should be no more than one page long, and should include your name and address. Letters can be emailed, but it is generally thought that snail mail letters are more effective.
You can find your Rep's email here.
A sample letter is in the attached PDF.
