At the provided link you can download a pdf file of what xp sp3 will contain.....you can also download sp3 but this is not the final built so best wait.
Basically Sp3 will offer very near NOTHING for the average home computer user. In fact, as stated in the pdf file SP3 will GIVE the average home computer user WHAT THE USER HAS DECLINED WHEN UPDATING.
As for the so-called "new features". I was able to download MMC 3.0 from microsoft. MMC 3.0 offers nothing to the Home User but is more directed at IT people. MSXML6 also was downloaded from microsoft......along with THE SECURITY PATCH....so much for it being more secure as microsoft touted.
BLACK HOLE Router Detection: this by default is dis-abled in XP....ok, so what...simply enable it in the registry by making a new keyword. No biggie !
Certainly SP3 will offer a few "extras". however, you be the judge if they are actually of any value or interest.
SUMMERY:
If you keep your system properly updated and are not interest in a couple of new "toys" that sp3 will offer then definitely do not be fooled into believing that you will be getting any greatly enhanced security by employing sp3.......read the PDF file for yourself and decide. There was only one update that I actually considered a security enhancement. |

microsoft kernel mode cryptograhic module
Please no one mis-understand what I have said....to some they may actually feel sp3 offers some extra security...that of course is up to them entirely. |

Yea I should have been a bit more clearer. I understood that was only your opinion. |

| reply to The Snowman I'm very interested in what that pdf has to say. So, I clicked on your link. I got neatly sidetracked by Microsoft and can't get to your link and also can't get the Silverlight (whatever the hell that is) to download on Fx. I got stuck. Good. I'm on my virtual machine which has the MS spyware so I hope MS is taking note. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to Cudni Yeah..I should have said no.
I always get asked to participate in stuff almost every time I go to Microsoft site. Maybe because I am a longtime survey member and do all the surveys? Plus, I bet I got this screen because this computer has the Microsoft "spyware" on it...the thingy that will give me a free Vista Ultimate Disk in March. I just hope Microsoft is noting that their Silverlight stuff doesn't work right.
But what is installed?? I'm going to see if I can find it. Ahhh...I don't have javascript disabled in Fx. It's two javascript files. I guess if I close and reopen the browsers then I can get to the Download site in a normal way.
I've posted about this in Microsoft Help. I don't want to continue this here as its hijacking the thread. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. As to my opinion of Sp3 it is still in beta and anything is possible up until the day it goes Gold. |

I think not. I am as updated as I want to be and wouldn't like having MS dump in those so called updates I've chosen not to have. Thanks for the forewarning! |

And, of course there's not going to be hardly any new features in SP3. Vista is having a hard enough time as is... no reason to give people more reasons to stick with XP.

| reply to The Snowman As noted in my post here: »[News] Microsoft lets everyone try Windows XP SP3 , my interpretation was that SP3 will install WGA for those who don't already have it. RedXII1234 disagrees however.
And the stuff about Silverlight on the Microsoft site almost suggests they're going to expect everyone to install that junk in order to get updates. Did it look that way to anyone else? |

Hi Folks......Happy New Year (belated) to one and all.
What I do find interesting is that the microsoft ISO securty updates (all)(not related to sp3) is a whopping 1200 mb's and yet Sp3 is only a little over 300mb's but claims to provide ALL security updates....microsoft needs to get the story straight...LOL.

A lot of the older ones are replaced by more recent ones.
