How do you measure success?

I'm sure for those in the business, it's commercial success, happy customers, reputation. For the budding genius, maybe critical acclaim, being published.

What about the bonehead amateur?

Those of you playing the home version of our game may recall my reluctant conscription for a family event last summer.
»We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing ...

My mother-in-law called this weekend to tell me that while visiting friends, she noticed my picture of their friends' family - enlarged, nicely-framed and prominently displayed over their mantle.

Nice comments in the Gallery here at DSLR, the willingness for my wife to want to display some of my pics, and in general - comments from those in the know.

My brother is a good 35 MM photographer and he has given my parents and his 2 brothers framed pics as wedding gifts. All prominently displayed and when someone new mentions it I make sure to tell them who took the pic.... ME... LOL - no can't do that. When the picture was being framed for my father and stepmom, my dad went into the frame shop and someone made a very flattering comment about the picture - my dad was very proud to tell him who took it...

Purely and simply...by my other half. This person, blind to anything and everything around him and prone to sticking to that which he can see in the black and white without having to put any imagination into it, this person has now found beauty in the sky, in a cloud, or a shadow or lighting on something! This is totally astonishing. I've called him the "winter scene person" ever since we met due to his only liking things that were so characterless that they could have been covered with a thick layer of snow. Not so any more. Now, that is success!

Age is a very high price to pay for my maturity. If I can't stay young, I can at least stay immature!

since i dont sell any of my work, simply commentary from those whose opinions i value...

while i might know better, it still feels good when someone says "wow, thats such an amazing picture" or "oh my gosh, that looks professional" or whatever.
