[Newsgroups] Need suggestions for good $15 a month?

I use Giganews and don't mind paying for it. My sister is going to try the whole newsgroup thing out but she doesn't want to pay $25 a month. Can anyone suggest a provider. I have been hearing bad things about some of them. I'm curious are you happy with what you have. Must be $15 or under.

Must be unlimited account

I haven't tried the all-you-can-eat plans, but have been a long time and satisfied pay-by-download subscriber.

What will she be downloading? Maybe a metered plan will be a better fit.

She will be doing everyting from 100 meg files to 4.5 gig files etc. And she will be doing a lot of it.

Astraweb offers probably the most reliable service at that price. There is also ngroups.net which is what I currently use and also blocknews.net.

I am on my last month with Giganews and was looking for a replacement so I can save some money. After trying the 7 day unlimited service at »blocknews.net/ I am hooked. I was very happy with them and can't think of anything I didn't like. Right now they have a promo going for your first 3 months of unlimited access for $28.95. That is almost the same cost of a month at Giganews. They have 100+ day retention, I personally don't need anything more then a month or two of retention but you may have other needs. The speed is good too, I was able to max out my Comcast speeds through their servers.

What about the giganews reseller. Power something or other.

If you use paypal, then I'd give hitnews.eu a shot. Free trial, €6.50 a month or €18.50 for 3 months, IIRC. It's what I'm going to be using once my Usenetserver sub runs out this month.

They resell newshosting? Why do they offer much longer retention then newshosting then?

They resell Highwinds Media/Usenetserver, there have been mixed reviews on them in the past I'm pretty happy with them, just as "reliable" as usenetserver but for less money. Overall a decent value for the price. $9.95/Unlimited.

For those who are enticed by there one east and one west coast server, the two addresses both point to the same. I have seen other providers do this and I can not understand why.

No, they resell Usenetserver (at least, the premium service does), which has had MANY issues in the recent past, and still have authentication issues and connection issues [although bandwidth seems to be good once you surmount the previously mentioned issues].

[~]$ nslookup us-secure.newsdemon.com

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: us-secure.newsdemon.com
Address: 208.49.82.58

[~]$ nslookup 208.49.82.58

Non-authoritative answer:
58.82.49.208.in-addr.arpa name = secure.usenetserver.com.

Check for yourself, the reverse lookup is actually the once very faulty secure.usenetserver.com!

I use Agent Premium Newsgroups

$14.75/month unlimited, maxes my 12MB connection with 4 ports, and rarely has any down time at all. Tech support is very responsive on the rare occasion they do have a problem.

I think it is a Supernews reseller, IIRC.

That's a low binary retention though. 40 days? Yikes.

I check it often enough that it doesn't matter. Longer retention doesn't do anything for me the way I use the service, and after a couple of bad experiences, I found one that works reliably and is fast.

APN used to be a Usenetserver reseller, ran into a lot of trouble, and dropped them well over a year ago. Since then, it's been fabulous. The retention may not be as long as some comparable services, but for my purposes, the reliability, speed & price are more important.

That's all I need.

I guess if someone only wants to find recent stuff, that's good. But I often look for anything and everything (or whatever comes to mind), so I need a bigger retention...
