Re: Confirmed 12/768 now available in WV

OK this is my tech visit for 12 Meg/764 KB Internet story. (I sound like the Lifetime commercials now urg.) This is long.

Alright, the tech was supposed to come out today and install the 12 Meg service and switch a DVR box out for a standard digital box. Well he brought the SA Digital Box I needed (and created a slew of problems that I will mention later). He came in hooked up the digital box, got on my computer did a speed test and said everything looks good. My main reason for having the Internet and the DVR box switch done during the same appointment is because I didn't want to pay a seperate $29.99 fee to have a tech to come out and swap boxes.

Now from what I was told the tech needs to check your wiring, system requirements, modem, connection to the house, etc then call and say the house is ready then they provision you modem. He tested my modem prior to calling them and I didn't mention that I already have the speed, technically according to them I was still supposed to have the 1.5/256k speed.

So I ask "Don't you need to check the wires, call in after checking wires?" He said "these visits are just to confirm that you get the speed". I signed the paper and he left.

Now he goes to swap out my DVR with a regular box. Well get a kicker out of this, unlike past techs who call in the boxes while they are in your home, check to make sure all in your house are working in case you have more than one like me. He hooked up the digital box to my TV and called it in. Then he simply took my DVR to the truck called in the Internet and the box switch. Now prior to this visit I had two DVR boxes and one regular box. Well after he left my regular box that I have had since I moved in had - - - - where the time goes.

Now I am madder than ever I call in and get this girl who I talk to she tried reauthorizing the box three times so she set out a trouble call for the same day. Well it turns out the tech had removed my regular box and the customer rep. kept reauthorizing my new digital box. Then I bring up the issue of the Internet fee explaining that I won't pay the $70 install fee because he did a simple speed test. She kept arguing with me that I could not have received the 12 Meg speed prior to the tech visit. So I ask for a supervisor.

Luck is now with me. I explain what the tech was supposed to do today and she agreed that "if all he did was the speed test then that doesn't justify $70". So she made two attempts to get a hold of him but couldn't and she said since he did bring out the box I had requested then I would have to pay a $29.99 truck fee for that. I said ok because despite him goofing it up he did bring out the box. She said she would give me a $45 credit on my bill so I would have the install fee then a credit of $45 for the difference for the price of the truck fee and the install fee. She said from looking at my equipment listed that since I have phone service and a modem from them that could handle the speed she said I was ready to go.

Now back to the box situation. Another tech had to come for free (love Suddenlink Saveguard) and fix the problem. Apparently the first tech somehow removed my digital box from my bill and the DVR box was still listed. This is why the call center girl couldn't fix the problem. Well the 2nd tech straightens out my boxes and makes sure that the three in my home are on my account and working.

Now everything works and I am $45 richer.

My recent speedtest.net Speed Test:

Update: (1/8/08) I just now found out a day later after originally posting this that the first tech that had goofed up everything had somehow canceled the DVR service from my DVR box that I kept. Since I don't use this room that much I didn't notice the problem until I turned on the TV and tried to watch a show that I had set to record. When I hit List on the remote the box told me to call Suddenlink and order DVR service. All the functions were gone like fast forwarding during a live program, pause, rewind, etc. So I had to make another call in to Suddenlink and have that box reauthorized for DVR use. I would have posted this sooner but I have been busy busy busy.
