| Why my internet sucks? »/linequality/nil/2330615
about a month ago my internet was blazing fast, i just got back from school and it was awesoem... now its horrible, the past few days it hasnt been stable. I thought it was my Linksys router, since I wanted to hook another computer up to the network for file sharing and a webserver, so I then hooked this computer directly to the cable box, and im still getting the same problems.
What could the problem be? Is it on my end? (i kinda doubt)
any input would be great... thx

| Okay ive tried changing my cable wires around a bit... so now downstream.. Frequency 747000000 Hz Locked Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB Power Level -7 dBmV upstream.. Channel ID 1 Frequency 34800000 Hz Ranged
Power Level 43 dBmV
would that be an improvement? or the opposite? or the same?
Thanks. | |

What exactly did you do to change that or did you misread the -7 as +7 initially?
Either you have a freaky situation which is killing downstream only or you just removed a bidirectional 10db amp?
Wait were you routing it through a power strip or something?
that said your levels are within an acceptable range for internet on both posts. You are running a wireless router, sometimes you get interference on these and you need to change the broadcast channel in the router config, I had to move mine to 11 recently after moving it from the default 6 to 3 and having more packet loss. Depends on where you are what all is being used near you in the way or other peoples wireless connections and certain cordless phones 2.8Ghz IIRC.

The stronger signal strength leaves more wiggle room for potential future attenuation issues.

downstream.. Frequency 747000000 Hz Locked Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB Power Level 6 dBmV
upstream.. Channel ID 1 Frequency 34800131 Hz Ranged
Power Level 46 dBmV
and also, my cable does not connect to a TV, it comes from the ceiling and goes directly into my SB4100, I have another cable that connects to the TV, I guess ill hook it to my box and get results from it, cause im curious how good they are
and thanks | |

1 edit | Okay I think i know what the problem with my internet is... kinda...
Im trying to tracert a place from chicago... whenever i tracert someone, the first hop is in chicago... then it comes back to memphis, then it goes to another town in tennessee, then dallas. then denver, then chicago.
So why in the hell does it need to make that first hop to chicago - memphis - winchester - dallas- denver - chicago..
That makes no sense, and it wasnt making these hops like 3 weeks ago... Could someone please elaborate this and explain how I can change the hops it takes and what not.

| Just a guess; but Chicago has to be more than 7ms away from Memphis, so your first hop is probably a router closer to home than its name implies. Sometimes ISPs make changes in IP address assignments, but take their sweet time to catch up with the names.
Memphis looks to be about equidistant from Chicago and Dallas. So either would be a logical meeting with Level 3. I don't know if Comcast has a choice, or how to get them to look at the options. However, once you are riding Level 3 transit, you are at the mercy of Level 3 for the routing path.
You can check out this thread; it seems that Comcast did resolve a really weird routing issue in Texas.

| Re: Why my internet sucks? said by ozi :but I wasnt having any of these problems about a month ago. My internet was blazing fast, few hops, etc. and now its just bleeeeh wtf. Stuff breaks. Its an odd conversation to keep having with people every day.
"In May when I downgraded to 6mb my speeds dropped horribly! I then went back to 8mb and they didnt get any better!! FIX IT!"
Speed test cant even start, web pages painfully slow. After 5 mins of troublehshooting install a USB to Ethernet. Perfect speeds.
"How did my NIC go bad when I changed speeds?" "Just a coincidence. One isnt related to the other.." as I eye the Dell Deminsion 3000, the same exact desktop I have.. with a bad NIC myself.. "But my computer is only a year and a half old!" "And?...."
Crap happens. Stuff breaks. If it didnt then a tech coming out to run a new drop that seemingly has nothing wrong with it wouldnt fix an issue. A tech removing the splitter you JUST INSTALLED with another and having the problem be fixed wouldnt happen. An amp on the mainline wouldnt need to be adjusted because it just WIGGED OUT for no reason.
its like a tech showing up to your house for an issue and saying "I can troubleshoot all day.. but I wont. I know we havent changed anything in this area. Based on that Im sure nothing is wrong on our end..." -- CableTechs.org/"Horrible People with Integrity"

The hops have nothing to do with anything. Your getting 10% packet loss at your home, in the last leg. Hell, that 10% could be your modem for all we know.
You can always keep posting that the issue is still there and youve done nothing to change anything so it isnt on your end.. But again, things go bad. The issue is still there. Call a tech. Swap your modem. Otherwise whats the point. -- CableTechs.org/"Horrible People with Integrity"

| I just had some severe problems with my internet but finally figured out the problem. Since you're using a router I assume you have more than one computer hooked up.
If that's the case, make sure that your computers are connected correctly. If you're using Windows then go to My Network and click on Set Up Home Network on the left side.
Keep clicking next until you the wizard asks how you're connecting to the internet and choose the second radio button, through a gateway or something to that effect. Keep clicking next, supplying windows with your preferences and settings and finish the wizard. Run that on both computers and it might help.
Not sure if that's your problem, but it fixed my network. I went from no network and nearly no connection to my router's setup screen to my preferred 9.4/1.5mb connection

1 edit | Try using alternate DNS servers such as 4.2.2.6, 4.2.2.2 or (which some do not trust their credibility) the open DNS offerings.
Either way you choose, there are good instructions on how to make these changes at the OpenDNS site:

Y.M.M.V., just something else to eliminate as a cause of your issue...

| What flushing your DNS cache does is to force your local DNS resolver to go back to the DNS server to resolve IP addresses.
In your post with the trace route, and the "40ms to Dallas" comment, I keyed on the name of your first hop, "m0015963df91d.chcg.il.comcast.net [73.4.4.1]", and mistakenly placed you in Chicago. My own trace route back toward your first hop shows no name on that router: That should have changed for you after you flushed your cache. The latency, or routing would not change, though.
