| reply to ozi What flushing your DNS cache does is to force your local DNS resolver to go back to the DNS server to resolve IP addresses.
In your post with the trace route, and the "40ms to Dallas" comment, I keyed on the name of your first hop, "m0015963df91d.chcg.il.comcast.net [73.4.4.1]", and mistakenly placed you in Chicago. My own trace route back toward your first hop shows no name on that router: That should have changed for you after you flushed your cache. The latency, or routing would not change, though.

| reply to CUBS_FAN said by CUBS_FAN :OK, suppose I was mistaken.. I get 73.4.4.1 as a Chicago server too but its obviously not because I'm in Chicago and get 31ms. Your 1st hop is what a normal 1st hop should be so be happy with that. One should not completely trust the host name information as gospel.. |

1 edit | reply to ozi Try using alternate DNS servers such as 4.2.2.6, 4.2.2.2 or (which some do not trust their credibility) the open DNS offerings.
Either way you choose, there are good instructions on how to make these changes at the OpenDNS site:
Y.M.M.V., just something else to eliminate as a cause of your issue... |

Maybe your connection is querying sluggish DNS servers, or there are path issues with the route to them. Try pinging and tracing to your assigned DNS servers, or changing them to alternate publically accessible ones. I concur with eg, have you tried to flush your DNS? It seems 74.3.3.1 was in Algonquin IL, but not anymore.

said by NormanS :You have a problem with 40ms from Chicago, Illinois to Dallas, Texas? I pulled up a Google Earth view of Chicago-to-Dallas; at the scale of the display, the measure is 7 inches on my screen. Shifting the view, without changing the scale, San José, California to Seattle, Washington is also about 7 inches. And I appear to be about 40ms from Seattle. hes not in chicago |

| reply to ozi I just had some severe problems with my internet but finally figured out the problem. Since you're using a router I assume you have more than one computer hooked up.
If that's the case, make sure that your computers are connected correctly. If you're using Windows then go to My Network and click on Set Up Home Network on the left side.
Keep clicking next until you the wizard asks how you're connecting to the internet and choose the second radio button, through a gateway or something to that effect. Keep clicking next, supplying windows with your preferences and settings and finish the wizard. Run that on both computers and it might help.
Not sure if that's your problem, but it fixed my network. I went from no network and nearly no connection to my router's setup screen to my preferred 9.4/1.5mb connection |
