In particular it likes to monitor network traffic and some applications may need to be put in the Trusted Zone and traffic monitoring turned off for those apps to prevent slowdowns or side effects or spurious warning messages. But other than these small tweaks I've been very happy with it so far. After what happened with Symantec I don't feel I can ever really trust it again!

Been using NOD32 for the last couple of years now with no problems. Currently using Eset 2.7. Don't know If I want to try 3.0 as I've read about some issues when it first came out. Don't like suites will stick with a stand alone AV. K7 has amazingly good support. I had an update problem & messaged them. They replied quickly. After 3 exchanges of messages, the problem persisted. Then they telephoned me (India to Hawaii!!). The problem eventually got fixed.

The problem ensued from the fact that my registry cleaner (Ace Utilities) deleted K7's update registry entry. Between me & one other user we tested 3 other registry cleaners (Wise, Regseeker, Regsupreme Pro). They all did the same thing. After I configured my reg cleaner to ignore K7's update entry, the updater has worked just fine.

In case you decide to try K7 -- a 30-day trial is free; a 1-year license is $16.

Again, I must point out that K7 is a 2nd tier antivirus. It passed its only test by VirusBulletin, & is Checkmark approved. However, Blackcat's IT tested its protection at only 69% & BC commented that "K7 apparently is not too hot on spyware/adware and it also seems to be poor in heuristics."

Ergo, I regard K7 as strictly a low-risk surfer's AV for those who want to support a small company.

VBA32 is a good AV with dreadfully poor website admin. Trying to get a functional trial copy is an exercise in working with needlessly convoluted procedures & unanswered messages. It's sad that such a potentially good av is so poorly managed as to its business aspects.
Never heard of K7 until now. It's not even in any of the Security Updates Threads.
I hope you voted for other. You have posted that you like K7 here in this Thread. So thats a start, to making more users aware of K7.

Did you download the trial version from the main KL site?

The v7 you're attempting to trial .. it's KIS or KAV?

And, what version/build is it?

All I can say at this moment is that this was NOT the behavior I experienced during my trial period. Had it been, I also would have been very upset!

I intend, with answers to my questions of you, to inquire from those who'll know if this behavior is "new" or .. what/why?

Maybe you could help me with something. Yesterday I downloaded the 30 day trial of Kaspersky 7. It installed flawlessly and I scanned and it seems to work fine..

But I had left my computer for a approx an hour and when I came back as soon as I moved my mouse a pop up screen came up telling me I have 29 days left on my 30 day trial and included a link to buy now. This pop-up has popped up numerous times since then...Less than 24 hours after I downloaded the program I am about to remove it due to that reminder is annoying the hell out of me...I mean I just started the 30 day trial..Can't it wait till I get down to the last 5 days or so?

My question is can you tell me to uncheck something or do something that will result in getting rid of this annoying pop-up reminder with a link to buy it now? I want to give Kaspersky 7 a trial and have no problem paying the $59.00 or whatever it said it was but I can't compute with these annoying interruptions to buy it now...Can't I at least try it for one full day before getting hit with telling me I only have 29 days left?

False positives are a legitimate gripe (take note I am admitting to gripping now. ;)) but being nagged by a pop-up ad is not? Just because it is free does not mean I should put up with being nagged to upgrade. This is not a piece of shareware or trialware that I am testing out first, it is advertised as "free of charge". If I am happy with the limited free version over the more featured paid version why should I be continuously nagged to buy the "better, paid for version".

As for the trial after trial stuff. The each their own. If I trial software and don't like it, I remove it. If I like it I buy it. It's that simple.

As for a long free trial and moving from one trial to another, well a few links have been posted here...but not much. Other Security forums have more links to the free Avira trials than I have seen here. Plus, the links are posted in threads in the Avira forums. As to whether or not it is acceptable to post the links or for users to go from one free trial to the next...I asked internally about it and was told to contact Avira advertising department. That says to me that since the links are on Avira's website so if you find them, or someone finds them and posts them on forums, then Avira is ok with users getting one trial after another. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me but if their advertising department wants to do this that is up to them. I don't see how it could possibly violate any trial license agreement. Users are reporting at Wilders in a long, ongoing thread that they are adding another six months to their current six month trial via the link given in the thread there. Avira employees post in the threads at Wilders so they know users are doing this.

As for AntiVir, just because it is free does not mean I should put up with being nagged to upgrade or get the improved and better version. That is one reason why I do not use AntiVir, but it is not the only reason. The biggest reason is false positives.

You can get rid of the ad. Several ways to do it. Or, why not get the current SIX MONTH FREE TRIAL OF AVIRA PREMIUM? Then there would no reason to label Avira as adware/nagware whatever. Maybe you don't realize but Avira has the most GENEROUS trials I have ever see from an AV vendor. I know folks using Avira Premium for close to two years now and they have never bought it...went from one free trial to the next. There is also currently a THREE MONTH free trial of the Suite. So, I see no reason at all to bitch about Avira free having an ad when it updates. And to say that AVG or Avast are better choices because they don't have ads? That is utterly absurd...especially in the case of AVG.
I could also get rid of the nag by actually purchasing the software. I could only find a provision to get a 30 day test license and I am not really interesting in trialing AntiVir anyway. As for the friends who keep going from one free trial to the next, the does in my opinion defeat the purpose behind free trial before you buy. Maybe even the license agreement for using the trial version.

I never stated the AVG or Avast was a better choice. What I said was in this post »Re: AntiVirus Poll 2008. I gave my reasons for not liking them and why I preferred AVG. On second thought I suppose that could be construed as stating AVG or Avast was better the AntiVir. ;-)

For what it's worth. I do not use any of the aforementioned free programs. I already stated which program I use in my first post to this thread.

From my point of view. AVG Free is simple and can be installed without the email scanner. Even with the scanner installed it seems easier on the system. AntiVir is IMO adware so it's a no go. Avast just has way to many bells and whistles. All I want is a basic active scanner and AVG Free fits the bill.

That said I personally quit using AVG Free since it's took the exclude option out of the free version (I use OSS). I still recommend AVG Free and install it when building or fixing XP systems for my friends. If I can't talk them in to trying using linux that is. :-)

I'm going to have to agree with you here. AntiVir does have a very good detection rate, but I hated the continuous pop ups after each signature download.

Avast! is doing much better when it comes to detection rates (they weren't too bad previously), but there is a little more 'bloat' with them when compared to AVG.

AVG is a very light and stable program. I loved how my resources remained fairly low when using this program.

Yet, if I had to choose between the 3, Avast! would come out ahead each time. Detection, protection, ease of use, and reliability are all factors that they have going for them. To me, this is what I value most. YMMV.

The is a huge difference between the Corporate, even in stand-alone configuration, vs. the bloated consumer versions.
The Norton 2007-2008 consumer anti-virus is relatively bloat free now. The 2007-2008 versions are light on computer resources and runs lighter then NAV Corporate now.

I'm still not convinced though that Norton is the best choice and would highly recommend NOD32 as a first choice. Norton is getting close though in terms of performance compared to NOD32. The Norton 2007-2008 consumer anti-virus is relatively bloat free now. The 2007-2008 versions are light on computer resources and runs lighter then NAV Corporate now.

For those turned off on bloated pre 2007 versions, should trial the 2008 version. You will be pleasantly surprised.

On my main machine, I currently use Avira Personal Edition Premium on a free promotional 6 month licence but will probably go back to the free version in March when it expires. Two other desktops here have AVG pro on a one-year free promotional license which expires in December. These were upgraded from AVG free and will probably revert to that when the current deal expires. One laptop still has AVG free on it. I also put AVG free on my kid's computer.

In the past I used AOL's "AVS" based on KAV. I thought it was great until I discovered that it permanently affected CHKDSK operations even after it was supposedly uninstalled. It is no longer supported or available.

In the past I also tried the very popular Avast! but prefer Avira for it's better detection rates on my main machine, and AVG on machines used by friends and family because of its ease to set up and maintain; and because of its stability.
