PADT Errors (Westell 6100, NW Wa)

Hello,

Having the errors below on my Westel 6100. I am approximately 2k feet from the CO. My neighbor is 1k feet from the CO and is getting the same errors, but not as often. Reading previous posts, it sounds like it could be caused by the loop having bad cells (»DNS server updates in the NW), or wiring problems. I hooked the modem directly into the NID, with hardly any change, the downstream margin went from 28.5 to 30. The errors seem to happen as often as 5-8 times a day. My SNR and other levels are also below. From the reading I have done, the levels look pretty good? I don't think this is an issue on my lines, as myself, and many other ctel customers in the area have been noticing disconnects (3 besides myself, that I know of). The modem is setup as a PPP half bridge (Public LAN). The modem takes the first address of my /29 subnet, and does PPP, and is hooked to a switch with the rest of my network devices.

This is just a snip from the current log, a log from the other day: »defcon-3.net/~cleb/dsl_log.pdf. I rebooted the modem, just to rule that out, but nothing changed. I am being provisioned for the 10/768 tier on Wednesday, which hopefully won't make the problem worse.

I have seen many logs that look like this. Unfortunately the solution has been different each time. We have seen defective modems, bad filter(s), suspect inside wiring and of course questionable copper from the NID to the CO/RT.

Others have solved disconnects by monitoring when it happens and linking it to something else. IE street light coming on, tread mill, furnace or AC, or a phone call.... Good luck!

Update: I did some testing, and the modem loses sync when the phone rings. I hooked the modem directly to the NID, and the same thing happened, when the phone rings, it loses sync. Could it be my modem? Could a problem with the DSLAM cause this issue? I have a Westell 6100, D revision. I will see if they can put in a whole house filter and replace the NID and see if that helps. I'm ruling out house wiring at this point, as the signal levels do not change considerably when I go directly to the NID, as stated in my last post. My signal levels don't seem to indicate a problem with the line, but I'm somewhat new at interpreting the signal strengths.

that's what resolved this issue for us. PADT, disconnects... replaced the old NID with one that had the whole house filter and it has been rock solid since. Just our experience, yours could be different.

Update #2: The repair tech came out today, and did something on the line, which seemed to solve the problem of the phone ringing, and the DSL losing sync. I tested this with the old modem, and got no lost sync when calling in. The modem is an older 6100, so it would only sync up at 8000 and some change. He gave us a newer 6100, a "G" revision, which supports the 10mbit. Below are my new stats, with no errors so far (8 hrs). My SNR margins seem to be doing better than before the repair. A download from kernel.org (knoppix dvd image) was downloading at 1.27Mb/sec, which I consider pretty good!
