| New Hi-Def Channels
Does anyone have any insight into the new hi-def offerings that verizon has been touting? I believe they mentioned offering up to 60 channels by spring and 150 by year-end '08. In particular I am hoping that they will be adding the basic cable channels that show sports on a full or part time basis, such as TBS, Versus, Speed, and the Golf channel. My calls to verizon customer service have been a waste of time on this issue. |

I agree and add that they will probably add the ones that other Cable Cos like Comcast have first ex: Animal Planet, CNN, History, Science Channel, Sci-Fi, TBS, TLC, USA & Vs/Golf. |

I believe currently channels 2-50 are reserved for analog broadcast channels. |

| reply to tew1165 Just a follow up question. Comcast ownes Versus and the Golf channel and they combine those two into one shard hi-def channel. Assuming Verizon is going to aquire this combined hi-def channel, how will they offer it, since Versus is on the standard tier and Golf is on a seperate sports tier? |

| reply to tew1165 With spring only 3 months away, I would hope we start hearing some news about new HD channels. They should come out blazing by offering between 5 & 10 new HD channels. This would be my recommended lineup:
CNN HD TBS HD GOLF/VERSUS HD MTV HD SCI-FI HD SPIKE HD NICK HD
One last thing they need to add is MLB Extra Innings.
Let's start 2008 off with a bang. |

MTV-HD is an HD feed of the MTV channel (you know, the one you really don't need in HD because it's mostly a lot of reality shows shot in SD). |

Normally, I would agree with you about splitting hairs.. but at this point, there is a new "when will there be new HD blah blah blah" post almost daily. Sarcasm, hair splitting, and general lynching and torture should apply to those who do not bother to search.... |

Obviously, attention to detail is not your strong suit Frank, but pointing out an entirely inaccurate response to a question and then providing an accurate response is hardly hair splitting. |

TBS-HD has almost no HD and all SD is stretched, I think MTV HD is almost all SD. Checking avsforum, Spike did not air any HD programs until this month.
If you go by cable channel ratings, for the channels that are now presenting a decent amount of HD, are not using stretch-o-vision, and based on the results of the poll I did here back in October, I think the next four HD channels (taking 2 QAM channels) Verizon should add are:
Sci-Fi HD USA HD CNN HD Versus/Golf HD (but this may have to wait until verizon sets up a HD sports tier).
If not Versus/Golf HD, then Nickelodeon HD or FX HD.
The last 2 national HD channels Verizon gave us were: Discovery HD (good), A&E-HD (blech). Not the most promising pattern. Maybe it is time for a new vote for the 4 HD channels you most want thread? Who knows, maybe Verizon managers will read it. |

| reply to tew1165 According to Verizon.com's Channel Lineup for 01752, I see
Qubo 891 ION Life 892 iMetro 893 The Worship Network 894
But I can't see them on my guide or manually tune to any of them. My HD-DVR is upgraded with the new menu. Do I have to call them to add the "missing/new" channels. |

They are simply Ion SD subchannels of stuff that I, & probably many viewers, will rarely ever watch. Give it a week, if it's not an error they will be added to your local area as well ... |

BBC America is the 3rd (Robin Hood, Dr.Who, Torchwood). With the writers strike, they are one of the few channels showing new (non-reality show) episodes. I've seen some ads for BBC in HD, so hopefully Verizon will add them before too long. |

I think the start date is sometime in 2008, but nothing more specific than that. However, HDNet has exclusive HD rights to the first 2 seasons of Torchwood. They showed the season 1 episodes only a week or 2 later than BBCA. HDNet is currently repeating the season 1 episodes on Monday nights. Season 2 will start on HDNet on February 11, so you don't need BBCA-HD to get Torchwood in HD.
BTW, the new Dr. Who seasons have never been shot in HD, only widescreen PAL SD. |
