If you download more than your plan allows within a certain length of time, your download speed will be reduced to less than the speed of dial-up for the next 24 hours. So how do you know how much you've downloaded and how close you are to going over the FAP limit when HughesNet doesn't tell you? hnFAPMon will show you how close you are to the FAP limit along with other useful information such as signal strength, current and average upload and download speeds, and any problems your modem may be experiencing. The hnFAPMon Client is the portion of the program that displays all of that information on your screen. The hnFAPMon Service gathers the information from the modem and sends it to the Client. If you only have one computer connected to your modem you'll need both Client and Service installed on your computer. If you have multiple computers connected to your modem through a network, you'll need to install the Service on one computer and install the Client on all of your computers, but even if a computer on your network doesn't have the Client installed, that computer's downloads are still monitored by the Service as they pass through the modem.

--
HN7000S|Pro|.74m|1w|Satmex6|1250Mhz|WRT54GL/DD-WRT|Vista x64|Firefox 3 beta 2|2000 GSXR750|1999 VTR1000F

Lets create an FAQ for hnFAPMon

millham : I'd like to create an FAQ for hnFAPMon. I have permission to create a sticky once the FAQ is ready.

I really think that there is a need for this. There are lots of questions here about hnFAPMon.

So where I need help: What do you think are good questions and if you know, the answer.

Some ideas to get things started

1) What is hnFAPMon?

1A) What is the fap.ini file?

• fap.ini is where hnFAPMon reads information about the various HN plans for bucket size, recovery rate and when the FAPFree Zone starts.

1B) What is a modemDef?

• The modemDefs have the location of the various web pages stored in the modem that hnFAPMon uses to calculate usage. The location of these pages vary depending on the modem model and firmware release.

1C) Where can I get the latest modemDefs and fap.ini?

• You can download the latest versions from »downloads.sourceforge.net/hnfapm···etup.exe

You only need to install it on the system that is running the hnFAPMon service. Systems running the client do not need the update

1D) What modems does hnFAPMon work with?

• hnFAPMon works with all of the standalone modems from the DW6000 and up. It will not work (and there are no plans to make it work with) modems older than the DW6000.

2) What operating systems does hnFAPMon work on?

• hnFAPMon works on all Windows systems from Windows 2000 and up. hnFAPMon will work with any non-windows system, as long as you have Perl, and the required packages installed.

3) How do I install hnFAPMon os Linux/Mac OS X?

4) I just installed hnFAPMon, but all I get are question marks in the client.

• First, check the basics. Make sure that from the system where you installed the hnFAPMon Service that you can access the modem with your web browser. The link to do this is »192.168.0.1

• If you are able to access the modem, install the latest modemDefs available at »downloads.sourceforge.net/hnfapm···etup.exe

5) Does hnFAPMon work with wireless networks?

• Yes, hnFAPMon will work fine with your wireless network. However, you must make sure that your wireless router allows traffic on UDP port 6000.

6) Why does hnFAPMon show that the service is not responding when I'm doing a download?

• When you are downloading, the HN modem appears to give priority to handling the download traffic. When this happens, the built in web server stops responding to requests. The current version of hnFAPMon depends on the modems web server to gather the usage data, so when the modem does not respond, hnFAPMon will show either that the service is not running, or that the modem is not responding.

Once the modem "wakes up", hnFAPMon will be able to calculate the amount of data downloaded while the modem was sleeping.

7) My modem just received new firmware. Why is hnFAPMon not working now?

• hnFAPMon reads specific web pages from the modem to gather the usage data. When HN updates the firmware in the modem, the frequently change the location of the pages that hnFAPMon needs. When this happens, hnFAPMon will show you Signal Strength, but no TX/RX data.

To fix this, download the latest modemDefs here: »downloads.sourceforge.net/hnfapm···etup.exe

8) How do I turn off those annoying pop-ups?

9) hnFAPMon seems to have the wrong time for the FAPfree zone.

•The current version of hnFAPMon had a problem switching from Daylight to Standard time.

You can download the updated fap.ini file to fix this problem at the following link:

»downloads.sourceforge.net/hnfapm···etup.exe

When you run the setup, make sure that you select Update fap.ini to latest refresh rates This will fix the time problem, and also update you to the latest refill rates that have been calculated.

10) How do I adjust the recovery rate?

11) Where can I download hnFAPMon from?

• The current version of hnFAPMon is available at »www.sourceforge.net/projects/hnfapmon

12) I have several systems. How do I install hnFAPMon?

• Choose one system as the master. The master should be the system that is on most of the time. On that system, install the hnFAPMon Service and Client. On all other systems, only install the Client.

• Do not install the Service on more than one system! You will get strange readings in the client

13) Is hnFAPMon endorsed by HughesNet?

• No. There are various reports that HN will tell people to use hnFAPMon, and other reports that they tell people to not use hnFAPMon because it is not accurate.

14) I was downloading a bittorrent/playing a game/etc. and hnFAPMon did not show any activity. Why?

• The current version of hnFAPMon misses some traffic. This is being researched, and should be corrected in the next release of hnFAPMon.

15) My bucket is showing a large negative number, but I'm not FAPed. Why?

• This problem is still being researched. The best guess at this time is due to heavy downloading during the FAPFree Zone. If the modem does not respond to hnFAPMon during this time, but suddenly wakes up at 6AM, hnFAPMon will think that the download happened outside the FAPFree Zone. This is still just a guess as to what happening.

16) Is hnFAPMon free?

• hnFAPMon is free; released as Open Source. However, donations are accepted. If you would like to donate, go to »www.sourceforge.net/projects/hnfapmon and look for the Donate link.

Other ideas? Please help me here. I'm better at writing code than documentation...
--
FAP the FAPing FAPers!
DW6000 Home G3C 1307 | Netgear WGR614v7 | W2K | XP x 2 | Vista x 2 | 2003 Server
Humans x 3 | Cats x 7 | Horses x 4 | Chickens x 3 | Other critters x ?
