Total snowfall accumulation of up to 8 inches is expected over much of the warning area. There will be a very sharp division between the heavy snow area and a narrow band of mixed precipitation before changing over to all rain over locations south of the Illinois and Kankakee rivers.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...

Actually SIU was a consideration because they have a good flight school down there. I even toured SIU and really liked the campus. Sadly the flight school wasnt as good as here and thats the main reason I came here (cause i was a transfer student and the flight school was my main focus).

I think that they had previously had a Border Collie that they adopted when he was much older and mellow. Both dogs were from a rescue shelter. But when the older one passed, they got one that was much younger, and she obviously needed more stimulation than they were giving her, because there were holes all over the backyard.

After that week that I spent with her, she would jump the fence every time I was in the backyard so that I would play with her. They eventually moved away, supposedly to a house with a bigger yard and she was doing much better.

But I still think they got in over their heads. But, not much I can do about it...

To keep this on topic, I saw at least 3 rather large SUVs drive right into giant snowbanks after not making turns today. One of them passed me going at least 40 on a road that is 30 normally... I always found the many Saab drivers in New England to be the same. Conversely, Subaru, which is also known as a good snow car doesn't seem to have those sorts of jerks in them.

And this sort of snow, with a water underneath is particularly slick. Hell, any front-wheel-drive car with a standard transmission should never get stuck in anything short of a 6' drift. My little old Jetta does fine, as does the #2 car, a rusted out 91 Corolla - both have FWD and 5-speeds.

I was on the North side this afternoon - man, peoples brains just go AWOL in this stuff. Folks driving 40 down side streets, while on the phone in the midst of this stuff. It's one of the more dangerous aspects of these mongo SUVs. People think that because they are high up and have 4WD they can drive like the pavement is dry - buncha morons.

On the other hand, the concrete, grooved pavement on the Kennedy and (new) Ryan really help cut down on the slippy-slidey crap.

It kind of breaks my heart to hear your neighbors never exercised theirs. These dogs need room to run and must be kept busy. They are tireless. Very rarely is he sleeping during the day. Very intelligent, quite obedient (although he's in that teen angst phase), never goes beyond our driveway gate, and stays very near my daughter when they are playing outside.
Heaven help any mice he spots too.

The real reason they refuse to call snow days is that they CPS would stand to lose zillions in federal funds. Also there are union issues with rescheduling them for the end of the school year.

It's just dumb, but that's how it works when the school system is underfunded.

Another formidable winter storm slamming the Midwest was expected to move into the Chicago area overnight, dumping as much as a foot of heavy, wet snow across the region Wednesday and making a mess of the morning and afternoon commutes.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning that went into effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday and lasts until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The complex storm began as rain and sleet downtown and sparked severe weather Downstate, but by late Tuesday most of the precipitation had pushed off to the south and east, said weather service meteorologist Charles Mott.

They/we had 100 inches of snow that week, I'm not kidding a 100 inches... We got there and it never stopped... I had to get a broom to get all the snow off and off again...I remember I didn't really have snow shoes/boots, went inside an outfitting store and by the time we get finished got another 6 to 8 inches...We had to plan our way home because it was still coming... We saw a break and at 2 in the morning we took off for home and 120 miles later in Erie, Pa. we did spin out of about 3 360's but we made it... One thing about Buffalo they know how to keep the streets passable,,, They did have times when you were not allowed to use your car except in an emergency, mostly late at night...

The three Winters - 76-77, 77-78, 78-79 all had massive amounts of snow, followed by extreme cold.

76-77 was the coldest, but 78-79 had the worst combination of the two, starting with the New Years Eve blizzard (18"), continuing with the 20" ten days later - that's the one that got Jane Byrne elected - with another inch or two every day.

By this time in 79, people weer shooting each other over parking spaces. I remember being on the North Side on evening, and driving through a park. There were huge mountains of snow in the parks because that's where the pay-loaders and backhoes were dumping it. On top of one of these mountains - about 25' high was a VW beetle, all burned out. Some group of people were goofed up enough to somehow drag the thing all the way up the hill and torch it. It was quite a sight.

Snow plow drivers were working 24/7 and going batty. This is from the Trib on January 25th, 1979. It's in PDF so I can't copy the entire article, just the abstract. You may remember this:

Police report snowplow driver rams cars; 1 dead

ONE MAN WAS killed and five, persons injured Wednesday night when the operator of a road grader aiding in snow removal played havoc with his machine, striking several cars and finally rolling over a car on the Dan Ryan Expressway, partly crushing it.

The rest of the piece points out that the guy had been working nonstop for days. When a phalanx of cop cars finally got him over to teh shoulder, when they opened the cab a slew of Jack Daniel bottles came pouring out. All the guy said was "I wanna see my kids!"

I wonder what happened to him.

Last night, down here in Champabana right when the Super Bowl started (Even though we were all studying and not watching the super bowl, right?) we started seeing flashes of light outside. We first thought someone was taking pictures until we heard some serious thunder strikes and the lighting bolts clearly visible. Yet it was snowing,raining and freezing rain all at the SAME TIME.
Now today its less than 1/8th of a mile visibility!
