Switching from ATT POTS and DSL to dry loop and CV

I currently have ATT for phone and DSL. What I would like to do is switch to an Elite Dry Loop and Call Vantage. I'd also like to port my existing phone #, but I guess that is a problem. Is there an way I could port over my existing # from my DSL/POTS line to CV?

1) Add "Personalized Ring," a distictive ring service, to your line.
2) Have the telco swap your current main number with the new distinctive ring number.

The above steps put a new main number on your DSL/landline and allow you to receive calls on your current number during the porting process. This process will take a couple of days.

3) Sign up with and port your phone number to CallVantage. The number you're porting is now the distinctive ring number. Request a "partial port" to indicate that you want to keep your AT&T service after the port.

4) After port completes (2-8 weeks), call up AT&T and convert to dry loop DSL. Since you requested a partial port in step 3, you are responsible for having the voice line disconnected after the port. If you don't request a partial port, it's possible that AT&T will disconnect your phone and cut the DSL with it.

Good grief that is a complicated ordeal. I'm guessing you've gone through this with success?

Could I just do a dry loop now, lose phone service for a little bit, but then sign up with CV and get my old # back?

Get your old number back? HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

the advice given will keep you from paying an activation fee for the 2nd DSL circuit. further, a number must be in service to be ported. once disconnected, it's lost.

Not exactly
But I've seen threads in other forums where it was done successfully.

RockyBB said it rather eloquently.

It certainly would be nice if AT&T could manage the port internally and with the face of a single company. But, they can't. Instead, they encourage you to either be creative, change broadband provider, or select a different VoIP provider.

Here's how I did mine:

1. Requested my DSL to be converted to dry-loop. After the conversion, I had dry-loop and dialtone running on the same line; this degraded my DSL speed (even with the filter installed between my phone jack and phone) but I knew this would be temporary.

2. Once I confirmed dry-loop was operational, I ordered CV and opted to port my number over. This causes CV to take care of shutting my POTS account for me in the process.

3. After CV being activated and verifying the TA works, I went over to the NID (the telco's termination box at the side of my house) and simply disconnected the POTS line and left the new dry-loop line connected. And voila! My DSL speed popped up to the advertised speed (3008 kbps in my case).

Setup works well and the process was not as hard as the wait period...

Who tied your dry loop and phone line together at the NID? You are the AT&T technician?

The technician. He/she nicely marked the dry loop line at the NID so it was simple for me to figure out which line to disconnect onve my CV was up and running...

It was necessary for them to be tied since my jacks were all on the same twisted pair.

Is it possible I port my land line to my mobile phone with ATT? This would allow me to port my #, maintain service, switch to dry loop, and then get CV and port it back.

Was dialtone and DSL then on the same twisted pair? How does that differ from regular DSL and dialtone, which is on the same twisted pair as delivered by the telco? And by requesting dry-loop does that not imply that you automatically give up your existing POTS phone number? Sorry just trying to understand how this works, because I want to do the same.

Yes, the dry-loop DSL and dialtone were on the same twisted pair. There is an electrical difference between "regular" DSL and dry-loop DSL/POTS mixed together. Maybe a telco expert can chime in with the details. The end result is that, when POTS and dry loop DSL are fed onto the same wires, the DSL modem sees a degraded signal (attenuation, noise, etc..).

No, you don't automatically lose POTS when you switch to dry loop DSL. The provider will assign a new "number" to the dry loop line that is different from the POTS number. You actually have to have POTS disconnected or sign up for VoIP and migrate the POTS number. In the second case, the VoIP provider will take care of closing your POTS account with the telco; in fact, this is the only way to retain your telephone number if switching from POTS to VoIP...

In theory, it sounds like it would work. However, I don't know how wireless carriers handle port-outs. If you port your wireless number out, would they close your account and charge your the early termination fee (assuming you're under contract)? Would they be able to keep your account open (with no number associated with it) long enough for you to call them or stop by a store to request a new number?

You might also double-check with CallVantage to see if they can port in numbers from mobile telephones. I've seen on their website (in the past--haven't checked lately) that they're unable to port in numbers from cellular lines. That may no longer be the case...

If you're seriously considering this method to set yourself up on a dry line with your POTS number ported to your VoIP line, you have some good questions for your wireless carrier and CallVantage--worth asking them.

One other question--how does porting your number to your cell phone maintain your service/DSL at your home? Why the extra step of porting your home # to your cell phone?
