Maybe AT&T's business is slowing because people realize what a bad company it is and are punishing it for spying on us w/o a warrant?
Wrong, but congratulations. You're the first to bash AT&T in this post. AT&T is falling because the rest of the economy is taking a hit. That's the main reason in a nutshell. What do you think happens to service in a house that's been forclosured on? Gets cancelled for non-pay. People are getting laid off from all industries as the economy takes a downturn, so they cut back to make ends meet. But you got your bashing in. Congrats (slow clap).

Really? Because the article stated that people weren't PAYING their bills. I don't think people that aren't paying are going to order up new service with someone else. Especially if they want to transfer their old number. Once your number is canceled you can't move it. The circular logic of some of you is astounding.

umm.. AT&T's voice has been $40/month unlimited for a few years
Then again, so has Comcast and TimeWarners.

What I don't get is why more people aren't jumping to Vonage/Skype/Call Vantage Voip for $25/month

Exactly! I kicked the old AT&T copper to the the curb because 26-31K dialup just isn't very useful.

Comast Digital Voice - the difference is clear!

Comcast has spoiled me rotten!

I disagree. My household and those of 3 family members in NC have cancelled our landlines and dsl this past year. My father is next. We use voip, cell phones and cable internet. I would have stayed w/ dsl, but the Bellsouth dsl pices are higher then cable and 10-15% higher than at&t standalone dsl prices in the southwest region. Idiots!

or to pay as you go voip for $0 - $9/month.

i think people are afraid of change and of new technology.

DUH like - Dude, even with VOIP - you still need DSL. How do you plan to do VOIP without DSL ?

But if you have regular reliable analog line, why would you want to pay $$ a month to jump on VOIP?

Weird considering we had a 3% percent growth in the GDP last quarter, which was the largest in almost ten years I think? Wait....the biased media is pushing this "recession" into the minds of Americans everywhere. How about the fact that UVERSE was a MASSIVE technological mistake? I hate to stick up for Verizon here but ATT's half-a**ed FTTN over the FTTH decision was a huge mistake.

If its the economy then why aren't all other telecoms experiencing similar losses?

I don't use DSL I use a local wireless ISP. It's great having the provider a fwe mins away where I can talk to them face to face, and not a faceless CSR in India. I gladly pay a bucks more a month for service that is local and I can get face to face with the admin if they are not doing thier job. So far they have been leaps and bounds ahead of anything I ever had with a phone company.

I agree 1st the news jerks pushed the "housing crash" until it happened- now they are pushing for a "recession".
One wonders what could happen if the news jerks were to get positive about our economy and way of life.
Back to ATT this may also be some "early" poor mouthing before they start talks with CWA on contract which comes up in 2009.

Never underestimate the power of the media. Back in the early '90s, in the height of the gun control movement shock (tabloid) journalism was becoming mainstream. In Miami people were polled if violent crime was up or down. Something like 99% said "up" even though crime was down.

It was believed public perception was caused by a recent format change at a local teevee station, showing the same grisly details of the worst violent crimes *anywhere* in the country. The public was exposed to the same crime 20-30 times a day, with each 15-second teaser ad.

They're just doing what pays the most. If positive stories attracted viewers, they'd do it. Instead, it's human nature to slow down and stare at auto accidents. Or, to watch the guy standing on the ledge, threatening to jump (instead of congregating to talk about the nice weather).

Capitalism at work. Unfortunately we all pay as people with a perverted view of reality express their opinions in polls (or ballots).
